Hint: .m4a audio streams are decoded by compoundplug.dll.
I noticed this with Zoom recordings as they give you a mp4 and then m4a for the different speakers. The m4a worked perfectly in VEGAS but not the MP4 which is how I figured out the issue was only with mono audio decoded by mxcompound.

It's not really a problem with the phone. You could enable legacy AVC (or experimental HEVC depending on the phone settings) or do what John showed as a workaround.
