@EricLNZ That's very kind of you

Pierre you have to make that truck play properly in VP21b315 and maybe it does by now, due to your switching between versions and coming back to it, because any bugs you see in VP21b315 may be ones that only exist on your system. But if you get truck video playing fine then hopefully all other bugs you point out can be verified by others.

Todd-AO wrote on 7/23/2024, 12:25 AM

Here's a better example showing the frame rate problem with VP21b315 with AVC MP4

Everything is a mess until around frame 87

Btw a similar video was deleted earlier that I posted, don't know why, maybe off topic in the thread, but it's in the video section of VegasPro, so do we really want a mod deleting such important testing?

We need to work together as a Vegas Family

@Todd-AO Correct on both, and to clarify:

It was off topic for the thread which was about "A circular counter. Maybe someone needs it". It's considered rude to hijack another users thread.

Yes, it's proper to the video section of VegasPro but as a new thread or posting on another existing thread as you have done. Unfortunately Moderators cannot move individual posts. They can only move entire threads.

@EricLNZ Thanks for letting me know, but deleting @mark-y 's post too, not his reply to me but his original reply. His post was directly related to the thread. He's been here forever under various names, people call him the Vegas Professor, you don't want to lose people like that due to perceived rudeness.

So I heard this thread will be replaced in the very near future because of an imminent new release. Great news, and lets hope the problem I show in previous post has been fixed. I'm sure it has.

RogerS wrote on 7/23/2024, 8:07 PM

Threads aren't replaced when new versions come out, they just become outdated. This forum has 20 years of history stored here.

Todd-AO wrote on 7/24/2024, 10:22 PM

I was playing back a Sony HEVC 422 10bit file and noticed it played back horribly, saw it was still using the old decoder, and saying it was an AVC file , is that a Vegas quirk, or Vegas short hand calling XAVC-HS , AVC?

I hope that's fixed in VP22, and it uses the new decoder.

RogerS wrote on 7/24/2024, 10:57 PM

Could you share full MediaInfo for that file? I have X-AVC HS here but not sure if it's exactly the same.

Todd-AO wrote on 7/24/2024, 11:44 PM

@RogerS it doesn't list it in meta data, but it is HS. I also had a look at some old firmware HS from a couple of years ago, also doesn't say HS in metadata and Vegas is showing it as AVC, although it knows it's HEVC and plays it as such. I wondered if that's why Vegas won't use the new decoder due to it getting confused.

Thanks, that looks identical to what I have here so we should know the answer shortly.
(I've been mulling getting a FX30 or similar but VEGAS performance and compatibility with 10-bit workflows is encouraging me to hold off for now.)

I've been using 10 bit workflows with VEGAS just fine since 2017. Just avoid Sony.

With 21.300+ NVDEC is working much faster than QSV for most footage (great!) but it doesn't fall back to QSV with 10-bit HEVC 422 footage which is a pain point. If you have both footage on your timeline then what is the optimal file io setting?

My bodies and lenses are Sony so no way I would avoid Sony. I have been avoiding HEVC for performance reasons but the memory card/hard drive benefits of it are significant enough that I don't want high bitrate, high bit depth workflows with AVC.

So I'll stick with X-AVC S (AVC) (8-bit) for now and keep testing VEGAS.

Same here, except I never got enough time to copy my registration number before it closed on me. I can't think of a need to have it right now. Will I later be able to get from you upon request?

@Paul-Fierlinger Paul, what are you referring to? If it's your Vegas Pro serial number you will find it in your Magix account under My Products.

Thank you Eric. Done. Love NZ. My son has built a house and permanently moved there, revoked his US citizenship, he's that happy.

I am looking to imbed links to video files in a PDF file that will stream from my home server and are unsure which codec to render to. Does anybody have a suggestion as to the best for performance without losing too much quality.

A soft lockup happens when:

  • I make a normal 1920x1080 project and complete my work on this version.
  • I convert the project to 1080x1920 for vertical platforms.
  • Elements such as text objects soft lock the program if I try to view them on the timeline.
  • Applying a picture-in-picture to a clip also soft locks.

I tried clearing anything applied to the clips and images before the aspect ratio swap, but applying a new picture-and-picture does the same thing. I tried clearing out the project and prerenders, but that did nothing.

By soft lock I mean that the interface is still responsive and I can close the program without having to force close it, but the viewer display appears to be in a loop trying to show the active frame but it can't. At that point an instance of Vegas stays running in the details tab of task manager even if I normally close the program. I have to force close it. Tried restarting the computer with no difference.

Configuration:

  • Using build 315.
  • Windows 10 Pro (22H2, 19045.4780).
  • ASUS ProArt Nvidia RTX 4060 8GB with latest studio drivers (560.81).
  • Intel i7-6700, 64 GB RAM (4 sticks), MSI MS-7A72 motherboard.

  • Intel i7-6700, 64 GB RAM (4 sticks), MSI MS-7A72 motherboard.

I've since built a new PC. This time it literally blue-screened the computer and Windows automatically restarted. That's so bad it completely prevents me from doing this type of work unless I install version 19 which I haven't these issues with (have to copy-paste the clips from v21 to v19).

Again, here is the general process:

  • I have a normal project with the ratio 1920x1080.
  • I convert the project to 1080x1920. There are various clips, text, and sound on the timeline. It has been working okay on the new PC for changing the crop of clips. This wasn't the case with the other PC and Windows 10.
  • I tried adding a picture-in-picture to one clip that was cropped. That's when the bluescreen and instant restart happened.
  • Given that this has now happened with what are effectively two different computers and doesn't happen in v19 versus v21, I'd say it's a severe bug in Vegas 21. At this point I don't want to consider v22 because I'd be paying to potentially fix a severe application and PC breaking bug rather than different features or whatever.

The only similarities between the two computers are:

  • ASUS ProArt Nvidia RTX 4060 8gb GPU
  • HighPoint 4-Port M.2 SSD7204 PCIe Gen3 NVMe RAID Controller (4x 1TB NVMe in RAID 1+0). This only stores the project files. I have a separate OS drive.

Other specifications:

  • Windows 11 Pro 24H2
  • Version 10.0.26100 Build 26100
  • (Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.36.0)
  • AMD Ryzen 9 9900X 12-Core Processor
  • 64GB DDR5 5600mhz (I ran MemTest86 on this with success after finishing the new build)
  • MSI X670E GAMING PLUS WIFI (MS-7E16)\
  • I generally keep everything up to date driver wise and BIOS too, though I haven't checked that for a few weeks.

I see that version 21 is still being sold through Humble Bundle, so it's still relevant and should be supported. I can try to submit a support ticket in the future, but this is most of the information I have.

Can you share the project and media for testing? In general VEGAS can't blue screen Windows, though GPU drivers can. Would be great to get to the bottom of this and see if it's still an issue with 22.

Reyfox wrote on 1/23/2025, 3:00 AM

Humble Bundle sells older software. That doesn't mean that they are still supported. It offers and inexpensive way to obtain last years software at a low price.

Issues with 21 happen consistently in vertical video converted projects. I'll try to construct a small project, but not currently on a PC with it. Here is a clip of my twitch stream crashing while editing:

Keep in mind the project was initially created as 1920x1080, with details applied when I dragged a OBS created talking portion onto the timeline (NVENC HEVC MP4 30 fps). Then I converted it to vertical, applying crops to the clips on the timeline to fit the new ratio (match project aspect ratio context menu item in the crop tool).

I have the two options check boxes to avoid green frames showing up in the video. I believe they are for "experimental HEVC" and..ahh... I might have mentioned them in my original comment here I quoted.

Once I'm done with the normal video, I create a 1 minute vertical highlight. That means converting the product to the different aspect ratio and remove portions of it to fit the new size. Vegas 21 has issues with picture-in-picture and text once the project ratio is changed. Most likely anything already existing in the timeline. Not sure on new media or text added afterward.

The clip I attempted to apply a picture-in-picture to was probably a random PNG image. The other thing in the timeline at that spot was likely the NVEC encoded OBS MP4 encode.

I could dig into my streaming of Vegas to show a bunch of crashes while they happen, it's possible it blue screened in Windows 10 on my older PC when but I didn't remember it.

Copying the project clips from 21 to 19 was my past solution to this, so I suspect it involved their efforts in redesigning the display/decode/rendering engine.

I generally keep my computers up to date. Though I did see my new motherboard has one new BIOS update along with newer chipset drivers after trying to troubleshoot. Haven't installed them yet, but based on my past experiences with Vegas 21, I don't think they will fix this issue.

Yeah, that's how I picked Vegas Pro v15. I don't know if that would fly with US and especially EU law. We'd have to look at terms of sale and see if they claim no warranty and then compare it to what is legal.
