Vegas pro 22 - slow preview problem

Cliff-Colreavy wrote on 3/14/2025, 10:19 AM

I recently upgraded my pro camcorder to the Canon XF605. I shot a promo video for a client in

- 3840 x 2160 intra frame,

- CP file: C1.BT709 normal,

- format:  XF AVC YCC 422 10bit

When I reviewed the payback on the camera monitor the movie was running fine. When I downloaded the clip to my editing software the clip is running slow frame by frame as opposed to running at normal speed.  Do I need to format the camera clip before I upload to editing software

Thanks, Cliff Colreavy

10 bit 422 AVC won't decode on your GPU so I'd right-click on the media in VEGAS and "create video proxy." Otherwise if you monitor is also a recorder you could record directly to an editing-friendly format like ProRes.

If 10-bit 420 is an option that will play back better.

Cliff-Colreavy wrote on 3/15/2025, 5:06 AM

Thanks RogerS, you have been very helpful. A question if I may.....

Could I also use Long GOP as opposed to intra frame. Would that improve playback

Thanks, Cliff

RogerS wrote on 3/15/2025, 7:22 AM

Intraframe might be better but the biggest issue is 422. I'd suggest just making a proxy file in VEGAS and switching the preview quality to preview/full.

Otherwise, what is your GPU model and do you have an Intel iGPU on the CPU?

I'm running vegas pro 21 build 315. My cameras are 12 year old panasonic ag hc 150 and the highest output is 59.94i and I run them into atem mini exteme, which then outputs program in a 60p format, which I record in the highest resolution (I think it's called hyperdeck) on a SSD drive. I think it doubles up frames to achieve the 60p. My subject tends to walk around the stage. My question is, when I pull into vegas, and render to mpg2 widescreen for dvd architect, I've tried the disable sample and the de-interlace video options. Is the combing already cooked in to the footage when the atem converts it to 60p, or is there some way I can get rid of the combing in vegas by careful selection of the video options? thanks so much.

EricLNZ wrote on 3/15/2025, 5:21 PM

It seems your files aren't 60p but 60i so need deinterlacing. In Vegas which deinterlace option are you using?

Also your problem is a different one to Cliff's so you should have started your own new thread for your problem.

Jimbo wrote on 3/15/2025, 9:41 PM

Sorry, I'll do better next time. The footage starts out from camera as 59.94i but exits the atem definitely 60p. (as I said, I think the atem just doubles each frame). For de-interlace I've tried interpolate fields and none. For resample I've tried disable and frame blend. Any help or recommendation is appreciated. I render twice: for internet MP4 60p and it seems less combing. For the mpg2 widescreen is when combing is more severe.

EricLNZ wrote on 3/15/2025, 10:05 PM

@Jimbo I wonder if your camera footage is true 59.94i containing two different interlaced fields? If it is then the atem should produce 60 different frames, not 30 double frames.

From your comments it suggests the atem (whatever that is) isn't deinterlacing so the movement combing is cooked in as you suspect.

Try this - right click on a clip in Project Media pane, or timeline, select Properties and in the Media tab go to Field Order and change to Lower Field First. Then set the project deinterlacing to Interpolate fields.

Thanks so much. I'll give that a try tomorrow. Will respond tomorrow. The Atem mini extreme is a very popular 8 channel video mixer by black magic designs.

Hi,

1) Just purchased Vegas Pro 22. Installed it as soon as I received it. A few hours later a pop is informing me of an update...great! I install it and an error message is telling me that Version 22 as to be installed before installing the update?? Don't get it is installed!!??

That was yesterday. The same process happened this morning with the same result...also I could not find the update file on my PC.

2) Is there a way to ''save'' changes I would make on the Vegas Pro interface. Ex: I want to switch the ''Type'' with ''File Format'' on the right pane of the Explorer tab and not make that change every time I use my version of Vegas?

Insight on this matter would be appreciated....thanks in advance

Michel

@michel-plante Just download the latest version here and save it somewhere you can find it:

@michel-plante I don't think so. You can save window layouts in 'View menu > Window Layouts > Save Layout as...' but the order of columns in the Explorer window isn't saved, and it doesn't persist beyond the current Vegas session.

I would also like a way to choose which columns are shown, and save their order (like in the Project Media window or Windows File Explorer), especially now there are 20 of them available. There used to only be 4.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your quick comment. To bad, it would more than useful to have that option.

Have a nice day.

Hi Roger,

I must admit that with all the info you gave me and me, focusing strictly on VP 22, I can't find any Vegas Pro 22 update...I must tell you that I am French speaking and I might be missing some items that should interest me when reading what you gave me. Also I did write that I had an error message when installing the update. I was supposed to install it after the installation of the Vegas 22 program which I did...so what should I do when I do find that update? Thanks for your help Roger.

Michel

RogerS wrote on 3/17/2025, 9:04 AM

@michel-plante What build of VP 22 do you have installed? Check help/about in VEGAS to see it. The latest is build 239 so if you have an older one, please download 239 and then install it manually.

There's also a beta build with additional bugfixes, 243.

michel-plante wrote on 3/17/2025, 9:21 AM

Hi Roger,

I have build 239. Do you suggest I DL build 243. If I'm not mistaken a Beta app. is a non official app. not ready to go commercial?

Are you aware of the Update that was ready to install but for some weird reason I could not as explained earlier.

Do you think I should try and get that update? I thought it would be saved on my HD somewhere, made a search on both drives on my PC and could not fond anything?

Thanks for the help, really appreciated

Michel

RogerS wrote on 3/17/2025, 9:30 AM

239 is the latest public version of VEGAS, so you did update it properly. The other update you are referring to is probably the deep learning module for the AI.

If that didn't install properly it's also here: VEGAS Deep Learning Models 22.1.0.0 https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-where-can-i-download-vegas-pro-and-other-vegas-software--104782/

Should you try the beta version? That's up to you. You are correct it is not yet a final public version. That said I switched to it and others are testing it and I haven't seen new problems with it that 239 doesn't also have. It's up to you if you want to try it- you can always go back to 239 if you have a problem with 243.

michel-plante wrote on 3/17/2025, 11:50 AM

Hi Roger,

You said:'' The other update you are referring to is probably the deep learning module for the AI.'' You're right on that with the exception that I can't validate that it was a learning module for the AI.

If my English serves correctly, I understand that you're saying the build 243 is not worse or better than 239 and vice versa,,,if that is the case, i will stick with the 239 version.

I'm getter more aligned and thank you for that.

Have a nice one.

Hi,

Saphire FX follow the installation of new versions of Vegas Pro. So if Saphire is installed in Vegas Pro 21 it will automatically be installed in version 22. My license being over I decided to uninstall the Saphire FX app via the Revo uninstaller. The problem is that the  all the Saphire folders (different titles) are empty but still present in the Vegas Pro 22 FX envelope and I would like very much try to remove them. Went through Youtube to no avail.

I'd like to know if someone knows how to do that...thanks

Michel.

Reyfox wrote on 3/17/2025, 2:46 PM

You can go to this location on your computer: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\22.0 (or whatever version you are using). In that folder are two files that hold the database for your plugins: plugin_manager_cache.bin, svfx_plugin_cache.bin

Rename these files to something like plugin_manager_cache.bin_Orig and svfx_plugin_cache.bin_Orig. Restart Vegas Pro and when it gets to Loading Video FX Plugins, it will rebuild the plugin library. If the plugins aren't there, the folders will not show up. Also make sure that in this location, C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX\Plugins, there is no Sapphire.ofx.bundle folder.

Hey Reyfox,

You got it, everything was removed...thanks a lot for that.

Super

Ericlnz, thanks for trying. I did as you say, but seems about the same. Also, when I said double frames, I meant that every frame has a duplicate (I think what the Atem did to convert the 59.94i input to 60p output.

Hi,

Probably my memory is not serving me well. You can just about move the timeline cursor anywhere before the last peace of media on the timeline with the mouse cursor.

After that point the cursor will nor be displaced. Let's say my last media is at 10 min. from the 00. beginning point is there a way for me to move my timeline cursor at 15 minutes because I want to place a photo there or must I place my photo just after that last peace of media at 10 min. and move that photo at 15 min.?

Thanks for that info.

@michel-plante  ... Try and see if this works:

Move the Timeline Zoom Control under the timeline (the grey bar highlighted with an arrow in the image below) as far to the right as it will go. In doing so, use the mouse cursor on the bar itself - not the edges of the bar. In the timeline space that shows after the last video event on the timeline, you should be able to drag and drop a video event anywhere within that available space.

Another method that works is to add any video event - even a media generator event (e.g. a solid color) on to the timeline and drag it down the timeline to a time point where you think that the maximum length of the project is going to be - consider it an 'end marker'. Once saved, the entire timeline from the last camera video event to the 'end marker' will be available for media insertion at any point in between.
