Vegas Pro 23 crashing on startup

Dlow-Great wrote on 9/24/2025, 8:55 PM

Since upgrading to Vegas Pro 23, my projects crash when I open them around 75% of the time.

The initial pop up box appears and loads all the way, then the actual program pops up, but the load bar at the bottom left of the application only loads to a specific percent (this is project dependent) and then Vegas either stops responding, or crashes altogether. I have to sit there opening the project sometimes 20+ times in a row, and how that the project actually opens up.

I don't even get any crash report box, since the app itself just closes or freezes and needs to be forced shut off through my task manager.

Has anyone else seen similar issues with Vegas 23? This has happened to me on Vegas 22, but it was EXTREMELY rare. Any settings or files that I could change to potentially fix or use to find a solution?

Can you just open V23 on its own without opening a project?

What could help is to also provide your computer specs. Your User Profile is blank. Add your computer specs like mine below to your Signature. It is the place a lot of us look before continuing on with questions.

I have no idea of what OS version you are using, or anything else, including what format the project files consist of. What is the Vegas build number?

Have you tried RESETTING Vegas?

Sorry, I'm very new to this! These are my PC specs:

Vegas Pro 23 - B278
Win 10
AMD Ryzen 9 7950X 16-Cores / 32 threads
64GB DDR5-6000
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER (16GB)
Gigabyte B650 AM5 Motherboard

All files edited are regular MP4 files. It's always worked before! I have tried resetting Vegas but it has not seemed to work. I should clarify I can open Vegas on it's own no problem, but opening any old projects or new projects after a day or two, results in this annoying crash.

Nice computer build. You shouldn't be having any issues running the software and editing. MP4 is a container that can hold any type of file, it is what created that file that matters more.

Do you have Vegas installed on your C: drive?

I typically record games on my computer screen with OBS. Sometimes if the file is laggy, I’ll render it out completely one time, and edit the rendered version so it plays smoother.

And yes, I do have Vegas installed on my C drive. That’s where I’ve installed all my Vegas applications, going all the way back to Vegas 15.

how likely is it that a single file is the cause of all this? Since my project usually follow the same structure, I’ll sometimes go back to previous timelines and copy/paste the template I want to use. If one part of that is buggy, could that be my issue?

Reyfox wrote on 9/25/2025, 12:18 PM

Ok, OBS. I am not the expert on it, but other users have had problems with OBS created files. There is a way to set things up in OBS where it would minimize any issues, but I don't know what it is.

Hoping that someone who uses OBS successfully now, will add to the discussion.

As for buggy template, the only way to know is to use easy files that Vegas has no issues which and use them in your template, making sure that timeline and project settings match those of the files being used.

For OBS try AVC in a MP4 container with keyframe interval set to 1 in advanced settings.

If you record to MKV you can have OBS remux it to MP4 without quality loss.
