Vegas Pro 23, how to rendez with transparent background?

@3POINT  ... thanks - I didn't know that there was another video option other than .AVI, possibly because I never used QT rendering or was interested in QT since Adobe ceased QT support for Windows back in 2016. Consequently, Vegas deprecated QT in VP18 (not sure about VP17 as its not currently installed - edit: from a Google search it looks like QT was deprecated back in VP17).

That's excellent news ✔️.

The .AVI process was the only way of doing video alpha channel in Vegas Pro prior to VP19 build 550 (the last build of 19) when ProRes was introduced. I believe that it can also be done with a .png image sequence - though I've never used the .png render approach myself.

Like 3POINT says, before ProRes the only way to do videos with transparent background was through QuickTime, which I used since now so that's why I didn't even knew the existence of ProRes. But thanks again a lot for teaching me another way because it works perfectly and with the good colors! I'm currently working on my project since now I no longer have the rendering issue. ^^

@DiegoDimanche Do you actual know what "nesting" is?

No like I said earlier I'm not sure what nesting means in the editing world (but English isn't my first language so that's maybe why. But like I said I always need to render since I use masks a LOT and can't just have them nesting in Vegas (whatever that might mean xP)

I suggest you investigate nesting, as from your description, it would solve your issues. Essentially it means that you can treat an entire Vegas Pro project as a single clip inside another project

Vegas Pro Suite 22.0 Build 250
Boris FX Continuum for OFX 2025 Build 18.5.0.441 - 113
Boris FX Mocha Pro Plug-in 2025 v12.0.1 build 46
Windows 11 Pro - 64-Bit
ASUS PRIME Z390-P motherboard
Intel Core i7-97000K @ 3.6GHz
RAM 32GB (2x 16GB) 2666MHz DDR4

Oh I see. Well I will look into it but as for now this isn't my issue as the mask I'm working on isn't part of any project. I do occasionnally masks without any project in mind because I know for sure they will be needed in future projects, and some masks can take days, even weeks, to create (what I mean by "mask" is that I take a clip from a movie and I separate the character from the background pixel by pixel for most precision). So I need afterward to render it with a transparent background in order to reuse it (I know the same can be done with a green background and use chrominance incrustation but the result is not as good...)

So here's the thing - this must mean you have a Vegas project with all the masking set up in order to be able to render it. You can just use this project as the nested project. And you can reuse it in as many projects as you like.

Manual rotoscoping ... and yes it can be time consuming. But there are tools that can help here, such as Mocha Pro or Primatte Studio. They are not free - but if they can turn weeks of effort into days or perhaps even hours, then it might be a worthwhile investment

I've tried other ways to do rotoscoping but the way I do it is the one I like best because it's super precise. I don't really mind it being time consuming, all I see is the result.

As for your first sentence, yes I do indeed have a project with all my masks but I don't need it to do manual rotoscoping, I simply need the clip I need and then I open a new project.

Though it's interesting that there's a way to use the main project when I have all my masks and reuse them in other projects. Usually I simply go on my files and take it from there.
