If you want a streaming video site which is very similar to YouTube (including feedback from other members, personal channels etc.) but provides better video and audio quality, try LiveVideo.com. http://www.livevideo.com/info/help.aspx?section=3

LV recommends uploading .mov format at 445 x 334, which I think is the displayed resolution. YouTube only gives you 320x240, scaled. LV takes the usual formats: avi, .mpg, .mpeg, .mov, .dvr-ms, .mpe, .mp4, .mp2, .asx, .asf, .wmv, .3g2, .3gp, .flv, and .divx. Like YouTube, they output in .swf format only. The limit per upload is 100 MB file size, with no time length limit.

Youtube forces your sound to mono, LiveVideo does not, and the sound quality is quite good. Check out for example this nice classical guitar piece: http://tinyurl.com/ywmh35

Actually LiveVideo only gives you very slightly better video resolution, however it does seem to look better, and the audio is stereo and definitely sounds better. Details below from a test file I uploaded to both sites, downloaded the resulting FLV, and analyzed.

Anyone tried using Stage 6, the new DivX site, some of the material on there looks just stunning.

I wish Stage6 would really take off. It's biggest downfall at the moment is that you need to download a program to use the site. The same would be true about YouTube, but Flash has had nearly a decade to make itself stand.

Has anyone yet apart from deusx uploaded an flv video and had YouTube not re-encode it but deliver it as is?

Stage 6: yes, I've uploaded a few videos. Have to be in DivX format but they provide the software to convert. Free for 15 days! But cheap, anyway. Render out of Vegas as mpeg or wmv. I've rendered wmv as 720 25p and looks fine. Can cut down a lot more if you want fast loading.

I would say if Stage6 are charging for the tools, and the videos can't be embedded elsewhere, and you need to download a program to use the site, it will never take off in a big way. It will just remain a site for people who are more passionate about the quality of the video. It does seem to have helped breathe new life into DivX though.

Well Stage 6 isn't charging for the software, but it will accept video only in DivX format. So technically I was wrong is saying they charge for it, but if you don't have a DivX encoder they direct you to a place you can get it. If you want only to look, then no problem. Actually I don't have any objections to paying for software I wish to use and don't understand people who think this unfair. I wished to use the site as an easy way to give some people access to a short in which they featured. I reckon Stage 6 provided me with a service and not I them. If the quality wasn't good I wouldn't have been interested. Hard for me to believe that anyone who puts any effort into their work wouldn't be 'passionate' about quality.
