Vegas v14 (build 252) Cannot import RED files

suhaib-siddiqi wrote on 6/1/2017, 4:40 PM

Vegas is using old RED SDK. It can import only old RED Epic r3d files. It cannot import the RED newer RED camera files. After Googling, I noticed, that Vegas is using old RED SDK, therefore it can import only outdated RED camera files.

I went back and forth with then Sony about this in autumn 2014 and they were aware of the problem and I think the response was that no promises of a fix but was on a list of issues. Vegas 14 did get as far as Epic Dragon and Scarlet Dragon support. I suspect they do not support Weapon or Helium as yet, maybe Magix will be more reponsive about updating to newer Red sdk promptly?

wjauch,

Not Vegas 14, but Vegas 13 also supports Epic Dragon and Scarlet because Sony added the support for RED's old SDK. MAGIX did nothing about updating the RED's SDK support to the latest version of RED's SDK. Therefore RED Helium and RED Weapons, newer models are not supported.

Anyway, I thought I mention it. For me it does not make much of a difference. I have switched to Davinci Resolve as my primary NLE and Resolve has very good support of all of the RED's and ARRI hardware. Also, even Resolve 14 is in beta, it does render the clips much faster than Vegas 14 on my system. A 15 minutes 4K clip (with no FX added) takes close to 1.5 h in Vegas and ~45 minutes in Resolve 14.

Are you sure re Sony Vegas working with Red Scarlet/Epic Dragon? I don't recall there being an update from Sony that fixed this. (there was an early 6k dragon file that could be downloaded via a link from a youtube video that Vegas 13 could handle, but later files did not work for me.) Somone did post on this forum about which files to copy from a vegas 14 installation into a Vegas 13 directory that would let Vegas 13 use Epic?Scarlet Dragon files

I do not know about Scarlet, but  RED Dragon yes. For testing, I downloaded all the RED samples files from http://www.red.com/sample-r3d-files. None will import, except Dragon 4K files. Resolve imported all of them without any issue.

For what it's worth, this was in the release notes for the first release of VP14 (build 161):

Improved support for clips from RED ONE, EPIC, SCARLET, and WEAPON cameras.
- Added Post lift, Post gamma, Post gain, and Dragon enhanced blacks controls to the R3D Decode Properties dialog.
- Fixed an issue that caused certain clips to fail to load on upgraded RED WEAPON cameras with older firmware.
- Fixed a crash that could occur when loading certain old RED ONE clips.
- Fixed a color cast that could occur in clips shot with RED Motion Mount on the latest camera firmware.

I downloaded Red Weapon sample files from RED's web site. These r3d files do not import in VP 14. It returns an error of unsupported file. As I mentioned sample files (4K), from RED's website, for EPIC Dragon import.

FWIW Vegas 14 and 13 can open the Red Dragon 6k file that can be downloaded below this video:

IIRC this was an early Dragon file, I think Red subsequently changed the format slightly and Vegas 13 didnt keep up.

Don't know why the link I pasted to a youtube page just embeds the video, but the clip is titled "RED Dragon Test Shot (6K Downloadable file)"

That is the issue I mentioned. Vegas needs to update to new SDK from RED. I did not save the link from Google search. The article mentioned that issue was due to old SDK being used in Vegas.

I've tried the samples:
raven-45k-48fps
NF 6K Dragon
redonemx-4k-30fps
weapon-h2o-6k-24fps
epicdragon-lowlight-4k-hd-120fps
scarletw-standard-5k-24fps

no import problems, no errors
