Vegas Won't Render on Timeline but PPro Will.

Got cheapie trail cam that claims to shoot short avi clips. Putting one of the on V16 (or V13) timeline = blank frames. Premier Pro however renders on its timeline. One of these files can be seen at: https://1drv.ms/v/s!AgtB2u25sm0ZhpsYBRBryW2dAfOOuw The mediainfo is:

Have tried all interleave combos; no joy. These files do convert also and that is my current workaround so mostly curious as to why the avidll is a bit deficient.

You can render a segment of the project to the timeline, what's the difference? under "tools" menu I believe

I just downloaded your file and tried within Movie Studio Plat. Ste. 15 (bld.157), and the original did the same for me as you observed, a blank "preview". Then, I did a quick convert in Handbrake to an .mp4 format, brought it back in, and was able to view your footage within the preview screen.

I'd try the convert in Handbrake for a couple of your clips, before trying something else. I'm sure one of the "gurus" here on the forum may have an explanation as to why it is not playing that particular "Sony Motion JPEG" file (at least that is what I saw during the download of the file and it opened within Win 10 Video player - dangnabbit - probably because it was off of OneDrive?).

I tried installing the Mainconcept MJPEG codec trial as I've done in the past for an ancient camera that used the MJPEG codec but it didn't work for this video. I was able to get it on the timeline and visible losslessly and quickly using the Happy Otter Import Assist Script. It was announced here

I didn't need that big of a hammer, though.

@Chief24 Thanks for verifying that I didn't miss something! No, I don't think OneDrive has anything to do with...my experience suggests the files are generally playable which kind of adds to the mystery.

@john_dennis Thanks for the interesting find vis a vis Otter. It is nice to be able to use the "raw" file. I should have noted that it is an old (CS6) version of PPro that does work; maybe not surprising since maybe the older the better!

This discussion is about the same format as yours, or near enough.

The conclusion is that it may well open correctly if you have the Morgan M-JPEG codec installed. It's 20 Euros, but there is a free trial.

Otherwise listen to John 👆 (and note that he has the Cineform codecs installed to use the format that he chooses in his Import Assist demo).

I used Virtual Dub to "re-wrap" an avi file from a time lapse camera for use in Vegas. It's free and may work for you.
