Ver 12 - 5D and crashing - wuzzup??

vicmilt wrote on 10/1/2012, 11:35 AM
I know it's only been a week since the release, but how's the creashing situation.

I downloaded the final release of Ver 11 and it still crashes a LOT.

My workflow is way more important than new wonderous additions.

I know I'm pressing the envelope - I'm using the Canon 5D for source - but this concept of "cut - Save", "Cut - Save", "Cut - Save - Crash" is really getting old.
and if I get excited and forget to save - yikes, the language I've developed.

It totally brings me back to the original AVID 4000 (which cost me about $50k, by the way) - only at that time (around 1992) some genius at Apple thought it would be hysterical if they had a LOUD CAR CRASH sound when the computer went down.

I nearly smashed my machine to pieces one midnight, as I fought to make an air-date deadline, and that GD car crash was hitting me at 60 second intervals - oh well...

So how's v 12 looking guys?

any thoughts?

Haven't used it much but getting good vibes from it. I Keep getting kind of confused about the FX's like should I use Sony?, All? Third Party? Legacy? Or the other ones I forgot about? It also took me quite a while to figure out what I should use for rendering in the new menu. It's kind of getting as big as the Internet. Maybe should have a function called "Assimilate me as Vegas code"

I am running V12 as trial and it crashes, it is horrible.

Just simple shots on the timeline with T2i or EX1 footage and I can get it to crash easily in a matter of seconds or minutes. Slide the NBTP 2 to the timeline and crash. V12 seems to be worst than V11 which I bought and never used. On first use of V12, it crashed 3 seconds after playing a shot on the timeline.

V10 works like a charm and is stable on my computer.
With V11 and V12, you come to think that your computer might be the problem like the color curves problem where the settings wouldn't show up in V11 (and color corrector custom tab) but just before releasing V12, Sony issued build 701 which fixed the problem. So is V12 the problem or my computer? Here we go again.

This is really sad, since I like the new features in V12 including NBTP 2 and was a big fan of NBTP 1 but again, never really used it because V11 was unstable.

No way I can earn a living with V12 the way it is now.

It woud be interesting to know how many people are experiencing random crashing. I reported in the forum several last week taht I thought 12 was not ready for final release. We've got a variety of PCs and MACs here.

All the PCs experience random hanging where the task manager says the program is still running but the screen is greyed out and the program not accesable. Two of our PC have Radeon graphic cards and one has a Gforce. They all do this.

Support is useless. 3 days since reporting and I haven't had a reply to my email. Its not the software that sucks is the lack of interest by Sony that is going to sink them.

I'm gonna return to v 10 and see how that works.

What will I lose? Can't remember.

And YES - I did buy a whole new system in defense of continual crashing.

i7 is a lot faster than my Quad Q6600, but a thousand bucks to cure crashing w/o benefits smarts.

Sorry to hear that v12 is no better - I trust and love those guys at Vegas development, so I'm sure they'll figure it out.

I'm beginning to run a few things on my new i7 machine and am running a trial of VP 12. If you'll upload some throwaway 5D files somewhere, I'll try them out as part of my trial.

I decided to turn GPU OFF and to my susrprise, V12 is much more stable, runs slower on some previews, but it feels like the good old stable Vegas I was used to. NBTP 2 worked well so far and V12 has not crashed while I had 4 instances of V12 running side by side with some fx intensive sessions. And no glitches in the preview.

Honestly, I prefer stability over GPU speed and if this proves to be right, either my graphic card is not suited for V12 or V12 just isn't ready for stable GPU.

Anyhow, it still needs further testing but I just couldn't go this far with GPU ON on V12 and not having it crash.

FYI: I am using an ASUS NVIDIA GTS 450 with driver: 306.23-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-english-whql.exe

My initial problems with V12 turned out to be that BCC-7 is not compatible with it. I suppose I will have to upgrade to BCC-8 since I use these effects constantly.

One thing is certain, The first release of V12 is miles more stable than even the final release of V11. I think of V11 as SCS's version of Windows ME. Every bit as bad from the first day of it's life until the last.

Vic, I would upgrade right way unless you don't value your time. I wouldn't spend another second with V11. In fact, I'm uninstalling V11 tonight. There is simply no reason to even have it on my machine.

Last night I reloaded v10.

I didn't do a lot of stuff yet, but it didn't crash.
Hmmmm...
Am shooting for rest of week (my new SAG Featrue comedy, "Run Stinky Run" and we are planning to cut it entirely in Vegas.

But it's still undetermined which version.

I CAN'T STAND REDOING WORK WHEN I'VE FORGOTTEN TO CONTINUALLY SAVE.
My work flow in V 11 has become Cut-Save, Cut-Save, Cut-Save-Crash.
Even if I could auto-save at 30 second intervals it would work. The problem is that when I really "get into" an edit, I FORGET TO SAVE. Then it crashes and I've lost genius concepts, time and engendered stress. Yecchhh.

I STILL believe Vegas is the best editing system avaliable - at any price.
And I'm sure they will figure it all out - eventually.
But v 12 crashed on me within 15 minutes of installation - so I'm back at v10.

Do you have BCC-7 or BCC-8? BCC-8 needs an update not to crash and BCC-7 can't run on V12 without crashing.
Ros wrote on 10/2/2012, 11:12 AM
Laurence, what graphic card and driver are you using since V12 is stable for you?

Thanks
vicmilt wrote on 10/2/2012, 11:35 AM
What is BCC -
BTW - my new computer is a Gateway 16GIG Ram, Nvidia 620, Win 7 64bit running off of separate 1TB 7200 Seagate Barracuda - but (at this point) nothing is striped.

Should I stripe a work drive?
Thoughts?

I'd love to get into V12 (have simply given up on v11, based on my own and other's crashes).
More thoughts?

It's nice and fast with Vegas 10.

BCC is Boris Continnum Complete which plugs-in to Vegas
vicmilt wrote on 10/2/2012, 12:11 PM
And what are you using that for?

I'm pretty proficient with After Effects (which is roaring on my new i7).
Same thing?
Different?
Does it run as a plugin right in Vegas - tell me a little, please.
WillemT wrote on 10/2/2012, 12:29 PM
Vic, BCC is a very nice collection of effects, including a good chroma keyer, light wrap, 3D text, motion tracking, beat syncing of fx etc etc. Check the Boris website for a list of fx. It works as direct plugins in both AE and Vegas (different versions I believe).

Have you tried to run V12 with the GPU disabled? Some seem to have problems with the Nvidia 6xx series graphics cards.

Willem.

BCC7 is just awesome. It lets me do things like logo animation with little spins and twists without going outside of Vegas. I'm kind of pissed that I have to upgrade to BCC8 to keep using it in V12. There is exactly one new filter in BCC8 that I care about, and I wasn't going to do it for the $295 upgrade cost. That filter is one that smooths out sudden changes in the amount of light. It would really help with my Nikon D5100 footage where the auto iris changes in jumps rather than smoothly. Aside from missing that one feature, I was quite happy with BCC7.
