Vertical video is slowed down

Misha-Savin wrote on 7/31/2021, 11:28 AM

Dear Vegas community!

I have a serious problem that is preventing me from uploading videos to my YouTube channel.

Every time I insert a vertical, smartphone screen recording in my Vegas Pro 15, the video plays back in slow motion, whereas the audio proceeds normally. The exact same picture is present when I render the video.

This all does not occur when editing/rendering a simple horizontal video (non-screenrecording).

So I have Vegas Pro 15.0, build 416

My system:

Dell XPS 15 9560

Intel Core i7 7700HQ

Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050, 4 GB

16 GB Ram

Latest Windows 10 updates

Look at the variable frame rate:

Minimum frame rate                       : 1.991 FPS
Maximum frame rate                       : 106.888 FPS

going from 2fps to 107fps. That's all over the place. Video editors are constant frame rate editing software. As posted above, convert to a constant frame rate. You can use HANDBRAKE to do this. It's free.

Click on the video tab, select Constant, 30fps and MP4 after you've dragged your video into it.

Dear Vegas Community,

I would like to add something to this thread.

I do not understand why suddenly every screen recording from my phone that I insert into VP is a VFR file that is not properly being recognized. Earlier I did not have to do anything and it all worked fine.

I want to note that due to issues I had to reset my computer recently, and I had reinstalled VP 15 after that.

Does anyone have an answer to this?

EricLNZ wrote on 8/20/2021, 6:44 AM

Maybe your earlier files did not have such an extreme variation in frame rate. If the variation is small VP probably handles it by averaging out the frame rates.

Well that is weird because I still record with the same methods and devices like I used to, and even on my old Galaxy S7 edge all the screen recordings are suddenly in VFR.

Are you saying that you could not import the files into Vegas? All cellphones record at variable frame rates depending on different circumstances.

I was able to import screen recordings all the time earlier, and did not have to do anything. Now every time I try to edit them they are in slow motion. Like out of nowhere. And it happens from both my S7 edge and my new Galaxy S20 Ultra.

What are your project settings? Do they sorta match the frame rate? If you took your "old" videos in a new project, do they perform the same way?

HD 1080-60i (1920x1080; 29,970 fps)

Frame rate: 29,970 (NTSC).

I want to note that this only happens to screen recordings.

What I also noticed is that when I insert a screen recording, the above changes to "Custom (1080×2400; 6,292 fps)"

Frame rate: 6,292.

One way to find out, is to see what MediaInfo says about your file. Again, it isn't a constant frame rate and is variable. It's all over the place, causing Vegas to "misread" the information. Other editors have the same issue to varying degrees. At one time, Apple's own Final Cut Pro could not handle iPhone footage.

Here is a little experiment for you. Download Handbrake. It's free. Take one of your smaller variable frame rate videos that is causing problems, and convert it to a constant frame rate 30, H264 video.

Install the software and open it. Drag the video on top of Handbrake, in the video tab, make sure you tick Constant Framerate, Video Codec H264. Go up to Destination, give it a name and Browse to where you want it to go. If in the same place as your original file, give it a different name. Then click the Green Start Encode button and wait until it's finished. To test the file without opening Vegas, use any media player to see if it plays back correctly.

"Usually", Handbrake will solve the problem. Yes, it's an additional step in editing, but if it works....

Yes, I know that this works, but I was simply curious whether other people also had this issue (that it all worked and then suddenly it didn't).

Hi,

This is my first post here, but I am currently struggling with a similar (or exactly the same) issue on my project, since when I updated to Vegas Pro 19 (Build 381).

I now have issues with clips captured with OnePlus 8T, but not with any other sources (My project has clips from GoPro, drone etc.). I was able to determine the problem down to VFR. I think I will be able to fix this issue by converting these videos to CFR with Handbrake, but I am wandering, why this issue was totally absent in Vegas Pro 17 (Build 455) with the exactly same project? I would like to sort out if there's another solution to this as it really worked completely fine (Preview, rendering etc..) with Vegas Pro 17.

Video information (Videos captured on 8T, that are having the issue):

Hi,

I am posting more to this, as I just found out by testing that the problem seems to go away when I uncheck "Favor audio sync when playing Variable Frame Rate (VFR) media" in Preferences General -tab.

Video and audio now seems to work just fine on clips from 8T, but one big video seems to have audio totally out of sync now. I might use Handbrake on that to convert just it..

Funny thing is, the same box in checked on my Vegas Pro 17 (I still have it installed) and as said, the videos worked just fine there. Maybe this might help looking deeper into this issue, why those videos work in Vegas Pro 17, but not in Vegas Pro 19.

Check if your settings at Options/Preferences in both programs are exactly the same.

I would like to add that earlier on, for me everything worked just fine in VP15! Only after a re-install it suddenly started to do this. Any VP devs knowing what is going on?

After little digging into the subject, I found a tip to check Enable legacy AVC decoding -box in the File I/O -tab of Preferences in Vegas Pro 19.

Now I have tested different kinds of 8T clips with the legacy decoding on and everything has worked fine so far, in both preview and rendering, so I would say the problem is now fixed and I should be able to use those VFR clips from now on.
