Video keeps blanking to black in the preview and when rendered

Hi, my Son and I are having a problem with one of his video edits in Vegas Movie Studio 16. He's created a ~20 minute video with a small number of transitions, an extra audio track, etc, nothing too ambitious. He is seeing the video blanking to black at random points in the preview screen, while editing. If he jumps to a different point then the video will re-appear, but then the blanking will appear again sooner or later. If he does a render, the same thing happens, all is good to start with but then the rendered video goes black. The video will re-appear at some pointer later when viewing the rendered file. My son thinks this problem has occurs on video edits over a certain time. He has done clips of a few minutes without seeing this problem.

Has anyone else seen this type of problem? Or has anyone got any ideas of how we can track down the issue.

PC; i5 4460 3,2GHz with 8GB RAM, graphic card; Ratheon R7 200 series.

I have tried all the obvious things like restarting the PC, making sure nothing else is running, updating the video drivers, etc to no avail.

Any thoughts welcome.

If you're using GPU assisted processing during rendering I'd try switching it off and using CPU only to see if that makes any difference.
