Video playback freezes while audio still plays, crashes once I pause

Landon-Jensen wrote on 1/16/2025, 6:46 PM

Sometimes while the player is running, the video freezes in the playback view but the audio keeps playing, once I hit pause the program freezes up and I have to end the program through task manager. There's no crash error report.

Ive been using vegas pro for a while now and have constantly had this problem. Can anyone help me?

Information:

Windows 10

vegas pro 22 (122)

Nvidia 3070

AMD Ryzen 9 5900X

32GB ram

Well, your PC spec seems OK, so the likely issue maybe the media you are using. It would be helpful if you could post on here the details of the media using the free utility media Info. Use the upload icon above to upload the result. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download Also the latest build of V22 is 194

If you notice the video is frozen and the audio is still playing back, press CTRL-S before trying to stop the playback. I've found on the few occasions I've seen this happen (mainly in older versions like 20 and 21) that the project will still save. Then you can stop the playback, kill VEGAS, open it back up, load the project, and you will not have lost any edits. I've not seen this happening in more recent versions like 22-194.

Yep, this is what I've been doing. haven't lost any progress from this problem but its still frustrating. It happens once every 30 minutes

There has been a lot of discussion in which settings to record from OBS. I haven't used it, and you might want to search the forum of OBS settings, or maybe someone with my brain power and knowledge than mine will come in to help. But, OBS, depending on the saved settings has been problematic.

Yeah this is basically a second sense for me now, if the timeline isn't responding "oh shit here we go again" ctrl + s before pausing. Then spamming the X up in the corner and stop the Windows Report and restart.

Been like this on vegas pro 19, 21 and 22. Dosen't really matter if it's a cooking video recorded on a dslr or a stream edit. Or different computers, only real solution is not using GPU acceleration but that really sucks in other ways.

It's quite stunning that the Devs has done nothing to remedy this after all these years.

@Robbaz I disagree. My computer specs are in my Signature. I suggest you go to your User Profile and do the same.

I've been editing since VP14 and every version after that. Currently VP22 with the latest build. I edit all the time 4K, 10bit 422 from my Panasonic camera with no, and I mean no issues at all. And I have GPU acceleration enabled, even when I had the AMD RX480 8GB card.

So, it works for me and many others. If you are having particular issues, start your own thread about them and include all necessary information from this POST, especially "B" and "C". No one can fix anything without the necessary information.

True true if I'm going to be annoyed I should do it the right way, setting up a signature and making a thread if I can't figure out a solution. *But yeah I'm also using OBS so i'll keep a eye on this thread.

Limiting the key frame interval to 1 in OBS gives VEGAS easier to edit files.

Could you share any other settings you use in OBS?

Thanks, I'd start with the keyframe interval and see if that helps. Hopefully VEGAS will improve decoding of longer intervals in the future.

Just to confirm but changing key frame interval to 1 and the timeline became smooth like butter, still crashes but a lot less. Also going back to AVC/H264 with these settings for my recording. 👍

Thanks for the input. I also set the frame interval to 1 and that particular crash is no longer happening. seemed to work
