Video Preview Lag in Vegas pro 22.0

I have been trying to edit a video in Vegas Pro, but have been having troubles with Lag/stutter in the preview. (The video plays fine in other media players)

Initally I changed my video File from MKV to MP4 and it significantly changed the lag and stutters. It was almost un-editable because it would also freeze the application.

However, now as im adding in jump cuts and such, it is playing back at such a lag I cant even jump cut/edit it correctly.

If you uncheck "legacy AVC" decoding in options/preferences/ file io does it perform better? Try disabling legacy and using the NVIDIA GPU to do the decoding.

I was doing this but then it would save both files, and I'm only working with like 2TB and it fills up so fast

I WAS remuxing but with this particular file I converted it with a different program. When I remuxed it gave me 2 files, mkv and mp4. I have been thinking about investing in an external HD sooon

And I can change this QP and see if this helps me further!

Yes, would you like me to screen record it in my media player? I would review these particular areas in the clip and seen no issues with playback.

Edit: I think i understand you now, you want to test it yourself.... The file itelf is 24GB and I dont know how to share a file that large?

Just record a small sample with the same OBS settings as your problem file and share that file...

On the other hand, this forum daily sees issues with wrong or not suitable for editing OBS settings. Instead of each time inventing the wheel again, it would be good to teach gameplay screengrabbers directly which OBS settings give an in Vegas editable videofile.

Thanks for sharing that. The MKV was basically uneditable in VEGAS 22.250 and my laptop (RTX 4060 mobile).

I did a quick rewrap in ShutterEncoder and the resulting file was editable though not smooth where the video overlaps. Starting and stopping playback helped as does creating ram previews (shift + b) if there are troublesome parts.

See if a 1s keyframe interval makes it more editable.

I downloaded your (oversized) file and I can confirm @RogerS findings, uneditable in Vegas, but smootly editable in my other NLE's Davinci Resolve and Powerdirector. Overlapping the video hampers a little but that's IMO due to the unnecessary huge datarate.

I downloaded it, it took ages to load in VP22 (248), the blue bar bottom left of UI moved at a snails pace, once fully loaded playback was crap & added cuts just made it worse, I gave up after 5mins.

PS, Free Resolve worked surprisingly well, I cut it up, swapped those parts around & trimmed some. playback was mostly smooth, there were the odd stutter on first play with one or two of the cuts but a reposition of the cursor before the cut & a second play through it was smooth.

Strange that there seems to be a difference between Davinci Resolve free and Studio. My positive findings were also made with free Resolve.

It is possible that Resolve free is using a different decoder (CPU vs GPU?) or a proxy to play back the video.

I got a Media error after 2 seconds of play. I'm trying to figure out why the file is so large considering it's game footage.

But I deleted all almost 8GB from my computer. It took ages in B250 and it was still accessing the disk.

The original .mkv file took forever to build sidecar files for audio on my Vegas Pro 22-250 timeline. I did a quick and easy rewrap of the video while converting the three audio tracks to PCM in a MOV wrapper using Shutter Encoder.

When I corrected the Variable Frame Rate video to Constant Frame Rate (60 FPS, Speed) in Shutter Encoder while reencoding at CQ=20, the Vegas Pro timeline performance was dramatically improved.

Techno-Philosophical Folderol

Lose the Variable Frame Rate Capture (convert after-the-fact for old recordings).
452 Mbps is probably a shade high for a screen capture. This is not the Magna Carta.
Nothing plays smoother and loses less quality than PCM audio.
Don't be afraid of AVC-PCM in a MOV wrapper, it won't hurt you.
All of us need to find a hobby.

I would change the keyframe interval to 1 and increase CQ to around 20 and see if that improves things for you. Many people use OBS generated media in VEGAS.

Thank you for the video. I tried these settings and it made the video MUCH smaller, which is amazing, but no sound went into the video. Editing the clip seemed amazing and fine though.
EDIT: I changed audo to AAC and that works great.

I would change the keyframe interval to 1 and increase CQ to around 20 and see if that improves things for you. Many people use OBS generated media in VEGAS.

I tried this with a test clip, file size much smaller which is nice, but still having the same issues when doing cuts and stuff. lagg in preview without cuts

With these settings I have a few additional questions;

Is this the best Quality I can obtain? Will this upload to YT fine? Which setting is the best setting for exporting file out of vegas to YT? im going to edit this file into vegas without 're wrapping to mov' becuase i dont understand what that is or what that will do for me after

I noticed that viewing this on a media player shows less quality then what im used to seeing; but seems fine in vegas preview. is this because its just small?
since this is a custom setting it wont remux to MP4 so i would jsut edit it and then export out for YT. Im also worried that if a file corrupts, i wont be able to get it back?
