Video rendering causes my computer to black-screen and restart

Hi all,

I recently got Vegas 20 to upgrade from my old Vegas 13 (yes, I know, hella old, but I've just started making videos with some regularity). I am creating a 1 Hour, 15 min video that I want to render, and whenever I do, it goes well for a little while, but then the computer goes black screen and the computer restarts with all progress lost. I've fiddled with some basic settings regarding memory use and the graphics card, but nothing has been going at the moment.

My system has a Ryzen 7 CPU and an admittedly old GTX 960 graphics card, but I would still imagine that it would be enough to render a video like this at 720p, unless I'm missing something. I'm certainly hoping this an issue that can be resolved with software or settings adjustments and not new hardware for the moment. I look forward to hear what you have to think on this matter.

When your PC is also from the time of VP13 it's probably very dusty inside and system could become overheated during rendering which could cause a restart. Maybe first cleaning your hardware solves the issue.

@Stephen-Laarkamp Are you using Windows 7?

GTX 960 graphics card with2GB memory is likely to cause issues with V20, not enough memory.
You can open this file to see what Vegas finds when it looks at your GPU and determines if it is usable. Open with notepad. C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\20.0\gpu_video_x64.log

Not Windows 7, but I am still using Windows 10. Will definitely upgrade to 11 at some point this month.

Follow the instructions in this post and tell us about the state of your hardware when it fails:

I'm not that anxious to move to Windows 11 and my system is as new as they get.

Definitely looks concerning to me. A fair few of the red Xs are related to the restarts while rendering of course, but I have a hunch that it may in part have to do with the version of Windows 10 I'm running... or more accurate to say I'm forced to run, since whenever I've tried to update for nearly the last year, the update does not work. It simply doesn't put in the newer version and goes back to the version I have now. It's the main reason why I say I'm updating to 11, since 10 has been giving me hell lately. It's a hunch I have that this is related to the issue, but I'm curious what you might think.

Hi, I'm still running Windows 10 with no problem, Windows 11 was only released on October 5, 2021 so there will be lots of people running Windows 10 for quite a while,

Regarding Vegas & Windows 11 Google says - "Most people are reporting that is works OK on Windows 11, however it is not officially supported as on now January 2022. Gary Rebholz, who is the man in charge at Vegas Creative Software, has officially said this: VEGAS Pro has not been tested for and does not officially support Windows - 11.3 Jan 2022"

So I'd look elsewhere for the reason to your problem,

Can you click your icon at the top of this page - My Profile & fill in your Signature with the full name of your CPU, GPU & amount of RAM (Memory), these can be found if you right click the taskbar at the bottom of the screen - Taskmanager - Performance, also inc the Windows & Vegas version, this will then show at the bottom of your comments,

Just did so. The Windows 11 thing is something I will be doing anyway for unrelated reasons, but had a hunch that it might be at least somewhat related, since I'm even running an older build of Windows 10 due to the updater issues I've been having and the lack of a suitable workaround except for hard reset of the system (which I'd hate to do). I know the GPU is easily my biggest bottleneck, but hopefully it is enough to make things work with the right settings. I'll upgrade it in the near future in any case, but it's be great to keep it in the here and now. Also, had a look at the Windows 11 situation and Magix has said that Vegas 20 Pro (which I'm running now) is compatible with Windows 11.
