Video works on MS15, not MS17

Hello !
First time posting, I hope I did everything right.

I am losing my mind.
I started editing rushes taken from a GoPro Hero 10 Black on Movie Studio Platinum 15.0. Everything was fine, everything worked, no problem.

I then took the project file and upgraded it to Movie Studio Platinum 17.0 (build 223), as I did plenty of times for other projects without any issues, expecting it would go smoothly this time as well. However, upon opening, movie studio is asking me to find the videos for it because the medias are disconnected.
I do not have the option to tell the software "specify the file and replacement folder".

I tried to specify the replacement files one by one, but then I get an error message stating that "an error occured during the media opening and that the app doesn't support this type of media"  (approximate translation). The same error message occurs when I try to replace the media through Movie Studio- and when I drag and drop some videos, either nothing happens, or I get a stop sign as a cursor.

Other videos, from a GoPro Silver 7, work perfectly fine on this same project (their specs are further down the post).

I cannot for the life of me understand why those videos work in Movie Studio Platinum 15.0 but not 17.0. Here are my computer specs :

Operating System
    Windows 10 Famille 64-bit
CPU
    Intel Core i7 @ 3.20GHz
    Coffee Lake 14nm Technology

Here is the MediaInfo of one of the faulty videos (taken with a GoPro Hero Black 10) :

I tried uninstalling Movie Studio 17, resetting it with shift+ctrl+click, made sure I had enough disk space, updated my graphics card, my PC, tried an older version of Quicktime, uninstalled/reinstalled Quicktime, enabled/disabled legacy functions, installed the GoPro quick app, hoping it would add a codec or something, nothing worked.

I tried everything I could think of and find on the internet, and yet I'm still stuck, I feel like I'm missing something.

Other videos, from another GoPro (7 silver), work perfectly. Here are their MediaInfo, if that helps :

Module externe
  Nom : compoundplug.dll
  Dossier : C:\Program Files\VEGAS\Movie Studio Platinum 17.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\compoundplug
  Format : AVC
  Version : Version 17.0 (Build 223)

I did try to look into that compoundplug, but nothing useful came up.

I'd really rather not having to convert each and every single one of my videos, but if it came down to this, what would be the best settings to not lose any quality in Handbrake ?

Please help, I feel really dumb and frustrated.

I'm sorry for the length of that post, I wanted to be as clear as possible.

Thank you !

@Auros The quickest way to get to the bottom of your problem would be for you to upload a short problem file to a cloud service such as Google Drive. Others could then download and see if they have the same problem.

The QT plugin got broken in VMS17 but that shouldn't be your problem as your files don't need QT. I'm surprised to see compoundplug being used. It is usually S04compoundplug. Check in Options\Preferences\File I/O. Do you have the Legacy items ticked? If so try unticking them.

Auros wrote on 5/2/2022, 4:38 AM

@EricLNZ Thank you for your reply !

"upload a short problem file"

Just to clarify ; do you mean that I should upload the vegas project and some videos for people to open and try to see what's wrong ?

I'm going to look into the S04compoundplug, see if anything comes up.

"Check in Options\Preferences\File I/O. Do you have the Legacy items ticked?"

I did what you suggested regarding the legacy items, it didn't work. I unticked the one that was on, ticked them all, ticked/unticked the other legacy stuff, and nothing changed unfortunately.

EDIT : So, using the VMS15 file, I checked the videos properties again.

The videos that work in both versions use compoundplug.dll (Version 15.0 , Build 146), whereas the videos that only work in VMS15 and not 17 use so4compoundplug.dll (Version 1.0, Build 8532).

In a desperate attempt I tried copy/pasting the VMS15 plug-ins in VMS17, but it did not help. I also tried to find some kind of update or even older so4compoundplug version, to no avail :/

@Auros I meant just one of your Go Pro 10 files, that are giving your problems so we can try it with VMS17.

@EricLNZ

Got it. Here is the link, I hope it works fine !

That file is also not loading in my VMS 17 pl.
It loads when transferred with the free tool Handbrake
It loads the original also in VPro 19

@j-v Thank you for trying ! So there actually is something wrong with VMS17. That's really unfortunate.

Just downloaded Handbrake. Do you know how I can find the best configuration so that I can convert every video without losing any quality ? (All those videos are in 2.7K or 4K)

Weird. Opens in VMS16 Plat with so4compound plug but not in VMS17 Platinum. I note scrolling down the media info mention of Quicktime so thought that might be the problem as QT is broken in 17. I wonder if there's a connection even if so4 is used?

I had the same problem opening GoPro GHnnnn.mp4 files on VMS 17. See my post at https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/unable-to-open-gopro-hero10-mp4-files-in-vms-17-platinum--135147/#ca843942 which I discovered too do not open. So I now set the Hero10 to encode in HEVC only so all recordings are GXnnnn.mp4. The only thing you can do now is to convert the GHnnnn.mp4 files using Handbrake or other utility or use another video editor. Since I have Corel VideoStudio 2020, I was able to open and edit the GHnnnn.mp4 files there.

@BobN2Tech Ah, that's really good to know. I'll change the codec on my GoPro right away and convert the files, thanks !
