Virus Protection?

Hey there guys, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask it, but what the hell.

What would you guys reccomend in terms of virus protection for Vegas 8, DVD Arch.5 and just production stuff in general?

My system is a Vista 64 Bit. I was using Trend Micro 2009, but then it just crapped out on me. I've had it fixed at least 3 times and its still crapping out on me. So, what do you guys use?

Perhaps the two best know "serious" anti-virus programs are Trend Micro and Kaspersky. I personally have always liked Trend Micro and I am not sure why yours is not working right (did you use the 64 bit version for your 64 bit system?). Programs like Virus Shield and Norton Anti-virus are used primarily by consumers who get it pre-loaded on their computers.

I ditched Trend when it was renewal time (found it becoming a bit too "protective") and went with Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009.
No complaints at all.
For a bit more money (and added protection), you can get Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.

happy enough for the past few years with avast....

another for avast. from the free ones I've tried I found that one the most customizable for the price (0) & reliable.

Another happy Kapersky user here however why does one need virus protection on an editing system. I just keep my 'office' PCs and editing machines well separated, the less background stuff running on an edit system the better.

1. Stop using Internet Explorer

2. Stop using Microsoft Outlook

3. Don't grant automatic permissions with your firewall to save time unless for system processes like generic host, etc.

4. Consider setting up your antivirus software not to run automatically every time you start windows. You won't need an antivirus program monitoring your system when you are editing. Big resource hog.
I use Avast and while there isn't a setting to NOT enable it to start automatically, it wasn't that hard to set it up that way on my own. Let me know if you are interested in doing that if you decide to install Avast. It is also one of the few left that runs on any OS from W98 through Vista.

Bitdefender 2009 here - 3 computers for 2 years covered for $39 - never had a problem with viruses while using it - and it isn't a resource hog. It comes either 64 bit or 32 bit and will work with Win7 when released. Great tech support too.

Avast, but the suggestions to not use Internet Explorer and Outlook are also good ones.

Bob, sometimes people can't have a separate system for editing and other work. For instance, I pretty much have to use Vegas at the same time as DreamWeaver, Photoshop, Flash, Word, Firefox, and IE. And I'm expected to be watching my email too so outlook is running. I'm not really editing, just using Vegas to pull stills for web pages that are companions to videos.

While doing all this I need access to our local network, and since we have one person in the shop who gets viruses, I feel like I really ought to run my own firewall and antivirus.

I use AVG, others here use avast. Both seem to work and I've not gotten a virus (afaik, knock wood) ever.

ESET NOD32 (64 bit).

Very quiet and effective.

Very resource light.

Use it on my primary workstation (gotta have the internet, you know . . .)

as an aside to this discussion;

i have two main pc's, one for editing, one for all the 'office' stuff - however, nowadays i HAVE to have my editing system on line, if for nothing else clients emailing me every so often during a job with updates (you know, sorry, we spelt the ceo's name incorrectly), getting in graphics, searching for online material, wether creative commons or getty images.....

i'd love to go back to my old analogue system for just one thing - NO updates, NO virus's, etc ;-)

Another vote here for ESET Nod32. I've got (gasp) Microsoft One Care on my son's machine. It successfully cleaned all the crap he had picked up and has kept it clean for 6 months.

I've been using Avast for a few years, but I'm going to uninstall it because it's no longer free. I really don't need AV now that I've installed the latest free VMware virtual machine with a free browser appliance running as an app. in Windows 32 bit or 64 bit.

This latest iteration of VMware + appliance that I'm using has everything I need - Linux firewall, Firefox, Flash player (plus its player plays all other web video that I've encountered), word-equivalent app., drag-'n-drop between virtual machine and Windows, copy to clipboard/paste between virtual machine and windows, any size browser window - up to the full size of your monitor, 100% stable, it automatically installed my printer by just plugging it into the USB port, etc. Right now I'm using it to write this as I render a project in Vegas 8.

I've used VMware for years using Linux appliances (usually Ubuntu), and never had a hint of a virus threat (not much malware is written for Linux). If I ever were to get one, it is very unlikely that it could get out into my real machine; and I could just uninstall it and start again with maybe 15 min. time effort.

Details on how to install, with links to the software, can be found at the bottom of this page from my website:

http://www.homexam.com/EreportSystemInfo.htm

I couldn't be happier - try it, you'll like it (if you like the appliance, don't forget to donate to bagside)

I've been using Avast free version for years and never had a problem I didn't create myself. I like it because it gets updated every day,
I have Avast and internet on my editing machine and my "all other" machine. On my editing machine, it's used strictly for upgrades and downloads that I need for editing. When doing editing only, I simple grab a cord and unplug the line from the router to the editor.
Unless things have changed in the past couple of months, you can still get the free version, but you have to scout for it. One of their free versions is only free if you sign up for other stuff. There is a kind of mis-leaading upgrade message that has to read carefully to avoid charges. I won't say deceptive, but close. It's there, but you have to look. And you can turn it off if you have to.

Lynn

PS: I also second the motion on IE and outlook.

Avast here. Not obtrusive at all, finds things that Norton passes over from my wife's work machine. Using Avast for years

You have to reactivate the free license periodically, that's all.

I used to use it, but it doesn't catch as much merde as Avast does.

I use AVG Free, works fine for me.

I know you only asked about virus protection, but I also recommend:

Spyware Blaster
OpenDNS
