Whether you can import files depends on the type of files (MediaInfo), used hardware and the like. You don't say anything about that

I'm simply trying to import jpg, mp4, etc. to use in the timeline. Never had an issue in years until recently when the fiasco began when Vegas stopped opening with the "May 3, 2023" date issue started. I downloaded the fix... so Vegas opens. But I'm now unable to import any files.

Strange...had no issues like this.

Try reinstall?

@bill-h Pretend the word import doesn't exist. What exactly are you doing?

If you are dragging your media files into project media window and your problem is that you can't drag your media onto the timeline with left mouse click, try right mouse click instead. If you can't bring your media onto your timeline at all, in anyway, then probably need to reset Vegas or reinstall.
