The R9 380 is not a good choice for a rendering card. It is okay for a fast preview though....

It was just an example with the card I have!

"Does Intel Skylake also help Mainconcept MP4 encoding too?"

No, not here. But it does for Sony AVC.

On my Skylake notebook I tested with a project with 1080p25 XAVC of 1 minute length rendered to same properties.

Using MainConcept AVC it took 5 minutes to render, no matter if GPU boost or CPU only was selected.
GPU load was 4 - 8 % in both cases.

Using Sony AVC it took 1:50 minutes for CPU only, while the GPU load was 5 - 11 %.

Using Sony AVC it took 0:50 for both OpenCL and Quick Sync, while GPU load was about 50 % for both.

So using GPU boost of Sony AVC render is 6 times faster than MainConcept AVC render on this system.

Sony AVC is the only other file encoder that had some GPU support but it really did not use the GPU for very much and thus got little boost. Unlike MC AVC Sony AVC does not seem to be hard coded to speicifc GPUs and works with newer ones as well. At least it did when I checked years ago when I found out MC AVC was dead with my newer AMD GPU.

A simple comparison 1:57 project, R9 380, Sony AVC.....

V13

CPU 1:58 to render, GPU 1:53 to render

V14

CPU 1:52 to render, GPU 1:46 to render

The R9 380 isnt supported by Sony AVC, HD6970 was the last one. Try XDCAM EX with GPU on in preferences and off.

Radeon RX470 - Vegas Pro 14.161

Test render 1:00.06 (1 minute 6 frames @25fps)

SonyAVC MP4* : 1:31 (1 minute 31 seconds)
Mainconcept MP4* : 4:08 (4 minutes 8 seconds)
SonyAVC MP4 CPU Only : 1:42 (1 minute 42 seconds)

*GPU turned on - but as seen from GPU-Z, GPU load - not much used)

Additional SonyAVC vs MainconceptMP4 GPU test in Vegas Pro 13.453, but uses Radeon RX470

Different Project test render 1 minute (different source and media, but the same AVCHD format).
SonyAVC MP4 GPU*: 2:23
Mainconcept MP4 GPU*: 4:41

A good discovery towards my changes to RX470 even though I still need to use VP13 for sometimes now. Many times ago I use SonyAVC, but since I found Mainconcept MP4 uses more GPU with supported GPU Radeon HD5750, I changed to Mainconcept. Now, I need to use SonyAVC again to render to MP4. 1:2.5 is still better than 1:4.7

Thanks Set. That's a big leap in performance for SonyAVC in VP14 over VP13, even without GPU, right?  I wonder why.

And what about SonyAVC MP4 CPU Only in VP13?

NickHope wrote on 9/20/2016, 11:11 PM

Maybe the different project media is making a bigger difference than expected. Why not use the same project content for the VP13 and VP14 tests?

I know that was true for Mainconcpet AVC but when I had my 7950 I saw a small but measurable difference as @set has listed here in this thread. Same with my 5850 before that. That was V12 era.

Trying something right now, with my GTX 980, I see no difference between CPU only and GPU if available settings.

Because having trouble opening VP13 project on VP14..., also, VP14 cannot be opened by VP13... will try with it later.

A bit rush....

Just opened a VP13 veg in VP14.

Try opening some big projects containing HDV or AVCHD if you have any.

Thats my problem.
Projects with over 20 events, and VP 14 freezes/crashes (not enough RAM)
VP14 uses 100% Commit Charge / 7.530.960 KB Commit / 35% Used Phys. Memory (8GB)

Thank You OldSmoke, but for me it doesn't really make any difference.  I don't use GPU for any render option, I just posted that short test as reference for others.

That legacy setting only works for old graphics cards (Nvidia GTX 400-500 series or AMD Radeon HD 4000-6000 series. See section 2 of this post.). What card do you have and which encoder are you rendering with?

KleoSK wrote on 12/4/2017, 3:22 PM

i have 1060 6gb asus oc and where i find the encoder im using 1920X1080 30fps presset only what i change is the render using gpu if available

Render As > MAGIX AVC/AAC MP4 > Internet HD 1080p 29.97 fps (NVIDIA NVENC)

I'm not sure of the exact wording of the last part as I don't have an Nvidia GPU. If you click on "Custom Settings" in the "Render As" window, you'll see the choice in "Encode mode:" at the bottom. If you really need 30.000p, not 29.970p, you *might* be able to manually type it into the Frame Rate field, but it will probably only stick in "Mainconcept AVC" mode, not NVENC mode.
