VP15 Build 321 Crashes on Edit after Select All

mjohnsonn wrote on 3/31/2018, 9:06 AM

If multiple empty events exist anywhere on the timeline along with events containing content, selecting all and then right clicking any event or clicking the Edit menu causes a crash.

(1) Put an event with content on the timeline.

(2) Insert an empty event anywhere using Insert->Empty Event

(3) Insert a second empty event anywhere using Insert->Empty Event

(4) “Select All” using any method (e.g. Ctrl-A)

(5) Right click on any event or click the Edit menu.

Crashes every time

Confirmed in VP15 build 321. No problem in VP14. It only happens if the selection includes empty events, right?

Correct, but one empty event won't do it.  For the crash to happen every time, there must be two or more empty events along with any number of events with content.

This is particularly frustrating because Select All is something I do all the time during my workflow.  Now I have to hesitate every time and look or remember whether there are empty events.  It turns out that for the projects I'm working on I usually have a couple of small empty events.

Right clicking or hitting the Edit menu causes the crash immediately after the select.  This is so easily repro-ed and nasty looking, I'd think some curious devs would jump on it.

Folks probably get crashes frequently when they try to edit and have no idea this was the sequence that led to it.

This problem wasn't there with VP12.

I can repro this issue if there are at least three Empty Events in the timeline (even if there is no other media).

This just happened to me now with two empty events even after having updated to 321. I don't know if this has been already covered somewhere, but my workaround is to use the keyboard to apply copy instead of RMB. Then there's no crash and I can paste the selected events into another opened Vegas project.

Big problem is that the entire Edit menu is out of commission so what if we don't remember a particular hotkey?  We get a crash.  Cool that the workaround works great for you, thanks, I'll certainly be sure to review all my hotkeys. I'll stay away from the mouse more!

With the entire Edit menu out of commission because of a simple select all (by any method), I think they might consider this bug somewhat severe.

It happens for me in this case when I just have just one video/audio event and one empty event:

Like Marco, it also happens for me with just 3 empty events, but not 2 empty events.

It also happens in Movie Studio Platinum 15.

I reported it: [Ticket#2018040217001254] and will add it to the Known Issues post.

I'm really new here and pretty impressed with that response Nick! I had just spent the money to upgrade from 12 (finally) and this happened.  I can see that this was the place to come. Thanks Nick.
