VP17: Is this a Large Project? Is VP17 up to it?

Grazie wrote on 8/8/2019, 8:56 AM

Hello!

I've got the start of a BIG Project. Nothing yet on the T/L - yet. Imported to PM, but already I'm starting to recognise VP17 feeling the "burn" and almost went to a Non Responsive Mode. You know the one?

Some facts:

1080p + JPEGs + some CR2 = 770 separate pieces of Media.

12 Bins.

Seriously, what's been your experience prior to VP16 and now with VP17? Should I even consider these numbers?

TIA

Grazie

Well, added five more bins with heaps more Media and "Whiteout":

Please advise,

Hi @Grazie, don't have time just now to test, but is it possible to get this working by using nesting? (just to reduce qty of events on timeline). Perhaps also turning off any thumbnail generation. That's what seems to have caused me problems in the past with large projects.

@Kinvermark - Thanks. As I said, nothing on the Timeline, yet. Just preparing the Project by placing Assets in Bins. Where do you turn OFF Thumbnail Generation? Not something I wish to do, but if doing that AND it still starts to fail then there is a nasty issue. Please remember I've got a beefy machine now.

Again, is there a Physical limit to the number of assets and Bins? I've proved that above the figures I've got now VP17 slows down to a grind around 83% and then "Whiteout".

Any other Asset greedy Vegsters out there?

@Grazie

The Project Panel serves as its own dynamic Preview, so imagine Vegas attempting to preview hundreds of heavy images & 1080p footage all at the same time.

My advice is, import everything, but work with the explorer inside VEGAS instead.

So whenever you drag stuff from VEGAS PRO explorer rather then the Project Panel, Vegas won't have to do unnecessary computations.

At the same time, in the Explorer, you get to see thumbnails.

Also, why add CR2's to VEGAS? CR2's are raw image files meant for the likes of Lightroom & photoshop. You'd have to render those first.

No matter how beefy your computer is, these files are not meant to be opened in masses.

Also, what's your specs?

@Grazie There are memory issues with VP17 when rendering out to 4K. So if your project is 4K consider using VP16 until? its fixed. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/the-system-is-low-on-memory-4k-render-error-when-it-clearly-is-not--116565/

And GJeffrey mentions it here also … https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-17-first-impressions--116502/?page=4#ca725146

Kinvermark wrote on 8/8/2019, 9:51 AM

That's potentially combining two unrelated issues, however. Would be good to know what the boundaries are for media qty.

@Grazie Set project media window to "list" mode to prevent it from making previews/thumbs. Also, can turn off timeline thumbs in prefs if you get that far.

Mohammed_Anis wrote on 8/8/2019, 9:55 AM

I honestly think its the CR2 files being shoved in the middle of it all that's causing the crash.

It doesn't make sense to load CR2 files on VEGAS to begin with. They're non-processed images.

Kinvermark wrote on 8/8/2019, 10:07 AM

+1. Definitely something to check out.

Grazie wrote on 8/8/2019, 10:18 AM

@Mohammed_Anis - Your point on CR2 is well made. Good. So if I was to delete all the CR2s, VP17 should load with more rapid completeness? Make sense.

@Mohammed_Anis My Specs, see my sig.

@Mohammed_Anis When you say import everything? Where from and where to?

@Mohammed_Anis Yes, I could use Explorer and have done. This time I’m wishing to use the Bin facilities to make Keeper Decisions and the like. I really miss MEDIA MANGLER!

@Kinvermark You mean List View not Details View? I’ve already got it in Details View no thumbnails, more’s the pity 😤!

So, I’m looking for convergence of ease, functionality and creative decision making to work towards the Narrative thing. I’m trying to make an engaging movie here.

Grazie wrote on 8/8/2019, 10:19 AM

@Kinvermark And yes, it’d be good to know if there was an UPPER limit.

"That's potentially combining two unrelated issues, however"

Well unless you've added clairvoince to your skill set, why not wait and see.

I guess that's it's more likely than not. No harm done if it's 2 unrelated memory issues, It was to help Grazie.

It's also posted, with the 2 links to give other users awareness of developing issues. Theres so much happening at the moment with this new release that users can easily miss an important issue developing.

Or would you suggest that we should only post what you like and agree with.

Kinvermark wrote on 8/8/2019, 11:34 AM

@Former user You misunderstand my intent. I only mean that it would be nice to continue to test Vegas 17 rather than give up for now and fall back to Vegas 16.

(I am going to pretend you didn't write that last sentence.)

Former user wrote on 8/8/2019, 12:17 PM

Well pretend whatever you wish. I have the luxury of not currently doing anything serious, but if I was, given especially memory issues, I’d definitely do it on VP16 until it was more stable. If Grazies project is not of serious nature then by all means he can trash away and give us feedback, just set aside another server.

My intervention here, offering two perhaps related links is not completely altruistic, I also have this issue, so fishing in two ponds gives myself a higher chance of resolution. It’s called problem solving, as much an art as a science.

Kinvermark wrote on 8/8/2019, 12:20 PM

@Former user Do you not recognize that as very insulting thing to say to me?

Former user wrote on 8/8/2019, 12:45 PM

@Kinvermark If you’re going to get in the way of my efforts in resolving an issue that I have a vested interest in, not only other users, then I need to get you to back off in interfering in my process. That's a process in itself.

Despite what you may say to the contrary, I saw you’re post today as attempting to do just that. It’s probable that that wasn’t your intention, but it would be the effect certainly if I was foolish enough to take on board what you said and then say delete one or both of the two links I posted, because YOU don’t think that there related. I get it that you don’t see that, after all, you don’t have the issue.

We are coming from two different places with this, I'm simply attempting to inch towards solving a problem.

You're doing what your good at, hopping around, giving opinions here and there, sometimes, occasionally you do actually give solutions, in areas of your expertise and knowledge.

Everyone has an opinion, but people come here mostly for resolutions to problems.

Kinvermark wrote on 8/8/2019, 1:06 PM

Very Sad. Wrong answer @Former user Thought we were friends.

BTW: Your profile: solutions=5. My profile solutions=26. Maybe you are not as effective as you imagine. You do tend to like trees more than forest.

I'd suggest using the private message tool of this board to sort out private affairs. Both of you are known as helpful users.

@Marco.👍 I’m done anyway.

Grazie wrote on 8/8/2019, 1:57 PM

@Mohammed_Anis - Yup, of course you and @Kinvermark in support were right. I removed ALL CR2s from a Test Veg. VP17 loads faster but still hesitates at around 94% and gives that "Not Responding" message. But finally VP17 comes good.

So, here's the grim numbers: 924 CR2s @ 25mb average = ‭23,100‬mb = 23.1gb being heaved about! This has to be a First?

I like VP17. 😎

Something to keep in mind sir.

Even if you had all the processing power in the world, with dual computing specs and two i9 Extremes, along with a generous fantastic amount of RAM and intense GPU power:

There's a reason why professionals and post production suites budget for separate fast computing storage facilities. Engineers today cannot fully utilize multi-threading processors, let alone SINGLE thread setups.

I would still advise you to work in increments. Have VEGAS projects dedicated to different segments of the project, finish said segments, then combine them in a vegas project dedicated for the sole purpose of combining them. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Kinvermark wrote on 8/8/2019, 2:26 PM

@Grazie Glad you got it worked out. Question: how do your project media thumbnails perform with all that media loaded? Load quickly? Persistent? (or do they partially disappear when you scroll the window. )

I ask because I have trouble with this; but my system is pretty low-spec now.

@Mohammed_Anis - I’ve always worked the increment way. I completed an Africa’15 project which was segmented. It’s just this time with loads and loads of CR2s and this new PC, I threw caution to the winds.

Thanks for your support.
