VP9 (32 bit) first impressions...

First test results:

Pros:

1. Program load time is drastically faster

2. Editing "demanding" material on the timeline is somewhat smoother.

3. The new editing look is very cool.

Cons:

1. ProDad Mercalli does not work with VP9 !!!
("missing assign ('=') after word Video in RenderTemplate)

2. I experience only a very small improvement in render times (the J. Cline's RenderTest). My former result was 82 seconds with 8.0c, now with VP9 (32-bit) the result is 72 seconds. That is not a remarkable difference, as reported elsewhere. I'm running on Vista 64 bit.

A big disappointmet is the Mercalli stabilized, this only keeps me stuck for a while with VP8.0c because many of my projects include deshaking...

Hi,

Well, the new editing look seems to depend from person to person. My wife and me, we tried the new editing look for 1 hour, and found that our eyes begun to be tired very quickly, so we switched to the old one.

Christian,
great points!

>Program load time is drastically faster
For me, this is no big issue at all. I start Vegas - and it runs, for hours maybe.

>Editing "demanding" material on the timeline is somewhat smoother.
Definitely. A huge improvement.

Did you download the Mercali service pack dated April 29th?

John,

Nope, I did not know about it's existence. Grateful for pointing that out. I assume it will fix this small hickup. Thax a lot for you kind help :)

EDIT: Downloaded the SP for Mercalli. Now the application continues normally with the analyzing of the clip, but even a short clip seems to take very vey long to analyze. Therefore I canceled the operation but Mecally hangs in such a fashion that the analyze window shows "render cancelled by user", but there it just hangs, freezing the whole application...

Anyone else that have tried and succeeded with Mercalli in VP9 (32bit) ???

The first thing I did was to check out the MainConcept and Sony AVC codecs and sadly they're still the same old ones as in Vegas Pro 8. That's a disappointment as I was hoping for an improvement to either or both of these (sorry to be negative on this issue!).

However it looks like there are some nice new features, even for the HDV user, and I'll probably upgrade before the end-of-June deadline because I'll be switching back from 32-bit (on this laptop) to 64-bit (on my desktop) in November and, if I'm not mistaken, 8.1 didn't have the improved HDV codec that 8.0c and 9.0 have. Am I correct?

Just tried it.... works fine. It took a bit more than a minute to do the "fast" analysis on a one minute clip... and played fine after words on the preview.

My first impressions BTW..... GREAT program. Worth every penny! It addressed pretty much everything that concerned me in V8.... and then some. My only complaint... I do wish they raised the render bit rate for avchd a bit more than 16. But other than that... GREAT JOB SCS!
