VV3 should be renamed

BarryB wrote on 8/23/2002, 12:26 PM
The post "Why Vegas" has prompted me to wonder who else is using VV3 mainly for multitrack audio recording and mixing? Those who do may agree that "Vegas Video" is a misleading name. The only reason I upgraded to VV3 is because Vegas Audio was discontinued. I believe SF may be passing up a lot of potential customers because they see the word "video" and don't realize VV3 is as great for audio as it is for video--that its audio capabilities rival or surpass that of other audio recording/mixing/editing software. I guess I just feel the software should be renamed to something that points to its audio capabilities as well...and maybe my clients wouldn't be raising an eyebrow when they see me opening a video-editing program to mix their music. Just a thought.

Not that it fixes the problem, but maybe you should go into your preferences and turn off the splash screen on loading. At least that way it doesn't pop-up a big word 'VIDEO' in their face when loading.

You could even change the name on your start menu too.

Doesn't solve it, but makes it less in-your-face.

This has been discussed before when VV3 came out. Pros and Cons to both sides. How about just dropping the video and calling in Sonic Foundry Vegas 4.0? Or what about Vegas A/V 4.0? They could still add the LE for the bundled Light version.

I remember the name controvrsay from a while back, and I have to say that the word Vegas reminds me of the Town (bad) not the Star Vega (good). So if people buy by what works SF has nothing to wory about, but the name is a put off for me. Come on do you want your product associated with gambling, thats what Adobe Premier is for. :-)

I agree! New name would be nice. Maybe a contest for new name!
Looks like they are phasing out logo with guy pounding on anvil. I like that logo! Wish I could get big HQ .bmp of it.

Oddly, it was the VEGAS part of the name which caused me to try a half dozen OTHER packages before even considering Vegas Video. If it had not been offered to me FREE by my department, I probably never would have tried it. Now that I have it, I just ignore the name and get to work.

I'm just looking down the list of software I use. Vegas, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Cakewalk, Opera, Eudora, ACDSee, Trillian, F-Prot... all excellent programs. I think it's the software that makes a name 'cool' no matter what it is. I guess it would be smart not to judge software based on its name... better to hunt around for recommendations on usenet or web forums.

Yeah of course. A name is a name wich is a name. Just a name. But I agree with the guy above after all: Vegas just remembers me of Frank Sinatra gambling on the Black Jack table...reaaaal... hum... analog and neons and everything except what VVegas really is.
What brang me to Vegas was I saw Sound Forge at a friend's place and the software was so cool I ordered a catalog via internet. THEN, I knew VVegas existed... First question that came to my mind: but why the hell **Vegas** ?
Go with a change!

Hi BarryB

I also agree that the name put me off as it all sounded a bit "Glittery" to me. Having spent some time around professional video production folks, they tend to be a bit conservative.

I am a member of a forum that was originally set up to support FAST NLE solutions (I still have a FAST NLE solution). Several of the members there have acquired VV and are very pleased with VV. Whenever VV comes up, I get the feeling rightly or wrongly that other forum members thinked we have flipped our lid. Vegas Video indeed!!

I have previously said several times before on this forum, that I think VV is a terrific application and offers fantastic price performance and has a very solid future. Premiere watch your tail!

I suppose the cost of re-naming/re-branding would preclude this course of action.

Never mind, i'll continue to quietly hum some of Elvis Presleys old numbers as I do my editing.

Regards

Brian

I definately would like to download the "anvil" logo too...That would be really cool if you can upload it somewhere SonicDennis. Thanks.

And about a new name, I saw some posters in the creativecow.net VV3 forum that came up with the "video Forge" idea, hmmmm.....

Thanks! That would be nice! there was a time when I was thinking it might make a good replacement for the Windows start up logo, or put it in the credits of a video...to show off to friends what my "weapon of choice" was in the production.....since it turned out so darn professional, everyone wanted to know what program was used. Also good for future web page, if permitted?

I agree with those that the name Vegas isn't ideal. Whenever I describe the product to colleagues there is usually a pause and a look of confusion and then the question "Vegas?"

I've seen and thought of a few names:

There are the variety of "Foundry" product names -

VideoFoundry
MediaFoundry
DVFoundry
EditFoundry

The miscellaneous -

EditPro DV
PostDV
Post
e

The Sonic related -

SonicDV
SonicEdit
SonicPost
SonicStudio

and so forth...

I really dig the "Video Forge" idea but since Sound Forge is an *editor* (no multitracking) I'd have to go with the "VideoFoundry" idea which is less punchy but join both ends in terms of "choosing the right words"...
But, still, I really like "VideoForge". It's got this "crafting" idea attached to it...
Anyway, as long as we get rid of this "Vegas" glittery-Liberace-ElvisContest thing, everything will be A-1 !
Sr_C wrote on 8/24/2002, 4:03 PM
Back to the original post, the problem is that the term video implies that is all it does. We all know that Vegas has very powerful audio capabilities as well. VideoForge still would have that problem. How bout 'Sonic Studio Complete'
Chienworks wrote on 8/24/2002, 6:05 PM
Hey, at least i got them to add the word "audio" to the description on the products page. That's a start ;)
Ben  wrote on 8/24/2002, 6:10 PM
If they do decide to stick with the name for the next release, the best option - to placate us audio guys - would be just to call it 'Vegas'. Pure and simple. Failing that, I quite like the sound of 'Vegas Media'.

How about something like Muse? One's muse inspires and its generic enough to cover all the bases, and easy to say.
John_Cline wrote on 8/25/2002, 12:05 AM
Hey, it's called "Vegas Video," get used to it. I rather doubt that Sonic Foundry will go to the expense of changing it's name anytime soon. Perhaps when it's changed significantly enough to be an essentially new program.

Changing the name of a product once established is risky. More so for a smaller company that doesn't have a big advertising budget.

I'm constantly amazed how some say they are 'put off' just because of the name. I don't care what its called, its the best damn video/audio editor on the market.

What next, someone going to say they don't like the color of the box?
DanielH wrote on 8/25/2002, 12:29 PM
Now that you mention it... :-) Please don't get the people whow are posting for a name change wrong, and even though I can't speak for the group, I think that say's a lot about the product. Do you think that the Premier folk care what Adobe calls there editing app, they just whant it to work! I for one count my lucky stars everyday that I sit and edit with Vegas. I just don't have much else to bitch about.... but maybe a blue box with green text... What da ya think? ;-)

Funny that box color should be mentioned. Sony changed packaging of Premium DV tapes. Friend sent a link which took me to a site where there was quite a few complaints. Some seemed sincerely ticked off about the change. I found it funny reading. I have a good sense of humor.

Didn't think this thread would have so many posts already. Must be because there is very little else to complain about with VV3.0C, w/exception of a few minor adjustments that others have pointed out.
