VV5 - Consistent Crash while opening saved file

rpcoopman wrote on 5/23/2004, 6:39 PM
Hi - I have a saved VEG file newly created in VV5a and everything was fine: created it, rendered to mpg, saved and closed. It was fairly simple, but a bunch of work: AVI file no sound, a couple of png images, a few transitions (modified presets) like page curl, generated media, and some labeled regions. Now I can't reopen it to continue working. All media is still in original places. Any ideas? Can I reopen selectively loading media?

Few other projects I've done in 5 seem to be fine on this machine. (Sony P4 Laptop 2.8Ghz, 512 Mb)

Help. Thanks.

Here's the crash I get every time:

Update - the source of the problem is "PNG" image files. I'm using several. They import and render fine. But once I save a veg file with them in it - it always crashes upon reopening. I figured this out by moving files and loaded with them offline. This problem occurs with just a single png file. These were created in PS7 saved with no interlace. Not large - What's up?

ps - WinXP sp1

Thanks

Your crash dump looks exactly the same as in this thread reported by a couple of other users, but for BMP files.

MAJOR vv5 BUG: BMP images crash vv5

Unfortunately, we have yet to reproduce this problem here. Can you provide us with some additional information about your system, what other applications you have installed, etc. There is a list of questions in the above thread, I've listed them again below:

1. What version of DirectX do you have installed? (Start | Run | dxdiag will tell this)

2. Have you customized the Vegas layout in any way? If so, what have you changed?

3. What video card do you have? Driver version?

4. Have you tried lowering video acceleration? Use Control Panel | Display | Settings | Advanced and look around the various tabs for a hardware acceleration slider, try dropping it down to the next lower setting.

5. Are you running a non-English version of Win2K? If yes, what language are you using?

6) Right click on a bmp file- what is it set to open with by default?

7) What app (+ version) are you using to create the problem stills? Is this app on the Vegas machine?

8) What video plug-ins for Vegas do you have installed (list)

I had the exact same thing with a png, also created in PS7. To get the veg open, I renamed the png file so VV5 couldn't find it. I saved the png as a psd and replaced the png in VV5.
It's truly scary to watch VV5 fail to open a veg with a lot of work behind it, just glad it's not a hard work-around 'till Sony gets a fix for this.

Hello

Yes, I have the same problem at time to open a project created and saved in Vegas 5.0.

The project has inclued files with extensions *.BMP, *.AVI. *.TXT, *.JPG, *.FLASH, *.MP3. The project has many crossfades, texts, motions 3D planar, backgrounds, etc.

When I want to open the project show the next text:

The programmers would release a Plug-In or ejecutable (*.exe) of small size to fix the BIG problem.

Thanks

Nice workaround daryl. I'll have to keep this in mind in case I hit this bug.
SonyTSW wrote on 5/24/2004, 1:52 PM
So far we still cannot reproduce the problem here.

Can you please give us some more information about your system? (list of questions is below).

It may help us to reproduce this problem if you tell us what third-party plug-ins you have installed (video plug-ins, Satish's PluginPac frameserver, etc.), what video FX you are using in your project, whether you are running any anti-virus software, and so on. It looks like there is some sort of stack corruption or threading issue, but we really need to replicate this problem here so we can figure out what's causing it.

One thing to try is to turn OFF the general preference "Draw waveforms and frames in events" before loading your project. Does your project load now? Please let us know if this works (you'll probably want to turn the pref back on to work on your project).

8) What video plug-ins for Vegas do you have installed (list)?

First off, it's a very new, relatively clean machine. Sony (!) VIAO laptop PCG-FRV37 with XP Pro SP1. Quicktime 6.1 pre-installed. I only have installed a few programs: VEGAS 5, DVDA2, Boris Grafitti Ltd, Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, InDesign2, Acrobat 5 (full), Dreamweaver MX, Flash MX, SWISH2, StarOffice7, Java1.4, and Contour Shuttle Pro2.

Your questions:

One thing to try is to turn OFF the general preference "Draw waveforms and frames in events" before loading your project. Does your project load now? Please let us know if this works (you'll probably want to turn the pref back on to work on your project).

This does not help - same crash, even with single png file. Approx: 520x200 pixels - not huge

1. What version of DirectX do you have installed? (Start | Run | dxdiag will tell this)

DirectX 9.0A

2. Have you customized the Vegas layout in any way? If so, what have you changed?

No

3. What video card do you have? Driver version?

Radeon IGP 345M, Driver v6.14.0010.6388

4. Have you tried lowering video acceleration? Use Control Panel | Display | Settings | Advanced and look around the various tabs for a hardware acceleration slider, try dropping it down to the next lower setting.

I have slide way down - no effect (crash still occurs)

5. Are you running a non-English version of Win2K? If yes, what language are you using?

No - std english

6) Right click on a bmp file- what is it set to open with by default?

Photoshop 7- for me problem is with PNG files

7) What app (+ version) are you using to create the problem stills? Is this app on the Vegas machine?

Photoshop 7, yes (tried some created on another machine as well

8) What video plug-ins for Vegas do you have installed (list)?

None that I'm aware of ... other that defaults(???)

Good luck finding this. It's a real pain to convert all my images, but I'm thankful for daryls workaround!

I have had consistent problem opening a saved Vegas V5 VEG that contains still images. I have not had the problem in Vegas 4. I have installed VV5 in 4 computers - 2 of them will open the VEG, 2 will not. The computer that has been running VV4 successfully will not open a VV5 file that contains still images - doesn't matter that the stills are PNGs, PSDs, or JPEGs. the size of the image has no apparent affect (720x480 or larger or smaller). Anybody have a similar problem. Any solutions? ideas?
SonyEPM wrote on 5/26/2004, 12:31 PM
If you go to Vegas 5's explorer in a clean (new, empty) project, select a .bmp (or other problem still), right click>properties, a file properties window will pop up. In this window you will see the still reader .dll listed. Can you tell us what it says on your system?

(mine, example):

Plug-In
Name: stl2plg.dll
Folder: C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas 5.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\stl2plg

This info will help us close in on this issue- thanks

I am having the same problem with VV5 crashes when video and stills (.jpg) are mixed. [Except I have not been able to recover any of my works] Here is what I get when I open .jpg properties.

Plug-In

As I've said before, were' trying like mad to get a repro on this but have not been able to. DrJones said:

"I have installed VV5 in 4 computers - 2 of them will open the VEG, 2 will not. "

Is there any obvious difference between the working and non-working machines? OS? Installed 3rd apps (even app versions)? Video display? Direct X version? Plug-ins?
SonyTSW wrote on 5/29/2004, 10:30 AM
Also: Is there a difference in the amount of installed RAM between the working and non-working machines? Any page file size differences? Are the project and BMP files on a local hard drive, or network share, or an external USB or Firewire drive?
Catwell wrote on 5/29/2004, 11:56 AM
I too have experienced this problem. It occured with both .png and .jpg files. By removing the file extension I could redirect the program to the file and then load it. However, I was also using the same image as a Background in DVD-A and could not place the file without putting the extension back on.
I will add my setup info later when I get home to the machine.

ADDED:
One of the files was created as a snapshot from Vegas 5. But this file was then edited in Photoshop.

I have done some more testing on this problem. I can replicate it consistantly.
I started a new project, placed a single png file on the timeline, saved it and then closed Vegas.
I restarted Vegas and tried to open the .veg file. The same error as shown above was generated and Vegas closed when I closed the error message box.
I again started Vegas but this time, using Vegas explorer, I removed the .png from the file name. Now when I tried to open the file Vegas could not find the file so I pointed Vegas to the renamed file and it opened with no problem.
I next opened Windows explorer and renamed the file with the .png extension. I restarted Vegas and pointed Vegas to the renamed file and the crash was repeated.
An interesting point is that the Vegas explorer will not show the file when it doesn't have the .png extension.
I created a new project as before using the file without the .png. I had go to Windows explorer to find the file. After closing and restarting Vegas this .veg opened without a problem.

It doesn't make any sense to me but I hope my experimentation will help find the problem.

I too have been trying to duplicate the problem reported here...nothing as V5 opens wih no problems....about the only thing different I see is my .png/.bmp and other images were created with fireworks and not photoshop...could this be the culprit?

ATI Radeon 9000 Driver Ver. 6.14.10.6414

Looking at the above posts, I really thought it might be the ATI card, until I saw someone witha Matrox.

At this point, ANY images i use are converted to PSDs first. As with others, this is not a problem in V4 -- only V5.

Please contact our CS department- we can email you with a small beta .dll that has solved this problem for some users.

Unfortunately we have not been able to reproduce this problem on any machine here, but we are actively chasing this problem and hope to have the final fix available soon.

I installed the .dll I received from support and still had the same crash. However, it looks like I have the same build as before (5.0a 134)... was the beta dll going to change the build reference number?

Just for the record, the work around mentioned is:
1. rename all stills
2. leave them offline when opening project

And here is the error code recieved:

I am really hoping this gets resolved - which is a part of why I keep posting... to keep it active.

I attempted to reinstall V5 to no avail.

Funny thing is, I use V5 at work and have not had any problem... and I'd expect most of the same "computer habits" are on both machines.

I have a project that I can't really finish because of the constant crashes.
