VV5 - Consistent Crash while opening saved file

I'm sorry to keep bringing this up - but I have a few projects that are pending this bug fix... and some new information.

A friend of mine just loaded/upgraded V5 and experienced the following:

Loaded 3 stills over aproximately a 20 second period on the timeline.
Added three motion edits.
On adding a fourth, V5 crashed

This was a new project; it did not occur while opening a saved project.

There definitely seems to be a serious bug with still images on a timeline.

Do you have any new news in the "Sony labs"?

I am having the same problem as others in this thread.
When I combine stills and video in Vegas 5 I am unable to reopen the file. This has also occurred in files using stills alone.
Using PhotoShop 7.0 for stills, but am also using .jpg's straight out of my digital camera (not sure which is responsible for the crash).

Can you send the beta .dll referred to in this post?

I am not sure whether my experience will help with the problem described in this thread, but the veg file on a large project of mine became corrupted as soon as I added in a jpeg image to the timeline. Worse still, the backup veg file was also corrupted. Vegas 5 simply closed down when I attempted to use these corrupted veg files.

As an experiment, I decided to try uninstalling Adobe Photoshop 7, which was the default program on my computer for reading jpeg still images. After this was done, the default program for jpeg stills became the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer".

SUCCESS! Suddenly the previously corrupted veg files sprang into life again, complete with the jpeg still images. I added further still images to my project, and without Photoshop 7 on the computer, the veg file no longer became corrupted! I wonder whether Photoshop 7 really is the culprit here?

Removing Photoshop 7 from my computer solved this problem for me as well - thanks vegasnewbie. When i have time i will reinstall photoshop 7 and see if i can set some other image program as the default to see if vegas and ps 7 can live on the same machine in peace. Otherwise i may ask people if photoshop cs is working okay with vegas.

Had the same problem until I uninstalled Adobe Photoshop. Poof, the problem's gone.

We have been testing with numerous versions of Photoshop here and still cannot repro the problem. If you do re-install PS (which I'd think everyone would want to asap), please check the following after the PS reinstall:

From a windows directory, right click on a bmp (and also a jpeg)> open with>choose program....

Is Photoshop the default opener of this file type? If yes, change the default opener to "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" for both file types.

After doing this, does Vegas still crash in the opening bmp or jpeg scenario described earlier in this thread?

We'd love to eliminate this problem once and for all, we'll work with Adobe to do so, but we need your help to recreate the problem. Thanks all-

Changing the default opener to "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" did not help the problem.
Uninstalling Photoshop 7.01 did. I can now open the VEGs that contain stills.
Next, I'll try reinstalling Photoshop.
Thanks for the help to date.

For the record:

My friend whose V5 crashed when he had a few stills on the timeline, does not have a photoshop program installed. I think we should look a little deeper for the solution.

As a further thought on this matter, I found that my computer did not have Microsoft Direct X 9.0 installed on it. I installed this together with Direct X 9.0b End-User Runtime. I then reinstalled Photoshop 7 and made Photoshop the default program for opening jpeg images.

So far, Vegas 5 has operated properly without any corruption of the veg file that I experienced previously. This would indicate that a reinstallation of Direct X together with Direct X 9.0b End-User Runtime might solve the problem for some people. Vegas 5 now works properly on my computer with Photoshop 7 installed and operating as the default program for opening images. I hope this further experiment is of some help.
