Wavehammer settings

farss,
Thanks a lot for the info , it helped alot, I sat sown today thought about the signal flow and ended up turning all 23 track faders down,
[ a lot ], that took care of most of the Wavehammer hitting the red,
but first I tried your experiment, I disabled all track eq's and the Wavehammer came down a lot, still in the red but not nearly as much. Thats what got me to thinking about the overall track levels going to Wavehammer, down side is [ if this is a downside is that at the lower input levels to Wavehammer I had to lower the threshold quite abit for it to have any effect, same with Volume maximizer, then re-adjust the master fader, I overdid it as the cd I burned about tore me head off with volume. I try to adjust it to a more reasonable level tomorrow.

Another question,

How do you assign channels to a buss or FX channel. I don't see anything that says send / receive or even send for that matter.
What am I missing? also is there a way to lock all track faders so if you move one of them or the master that they all move together
[ the same amount].

Thanks,
Jeff

"How do you assign channels to a buss or FX channel. I don't see anything that says send / receive or even send for that matter. "

"Assign" and "send" are two very different things in vegas. Look at the routing diagram in help

To assign or send something in vegas requires you have a place to assign them to. On the horizontal mixer hit the button to add busses or fx

Now click on the word " pan" in a vegas channel, and you will see the names of the busses and fx. Choose one and the pan fader becomes the send fader

For an assign, just click the symbol at the right of the record arm button, and up will pop a menu to allow you to assign to a buss or master out

" also is there a way to lock all track faders so if you move one of them or the master that they all move together
"

click a channel, then to select a non-contiguous or single other channel, hold control and click the other channel

click a channel then hold select and click to select contiguous channels

once theyre lit up, theyll all move together

Thanks guys, I took a couple days off to give my ears [ and all of you ]
a rest. A few more questions:

1. When you render your mix to a new track does the new track include master fx or is the render to new track function pre master
bus?
2. I'm picking up some pops or clicks now in this recording, you have to really listen to hear them but they are there, strange thing is
when I solo each track in the exact spot where a click is the tracks are all clean. I also soloed all tracks once and it went away, weird? I cannot find an edit point that is causing them. Any ideas,

3. When I use the SIR impulse reverbs I have to reopen the impulse files each time I open Vegas. I tried saving them and a file does save but when I try to reload the saved file I get a message that says the file is too long. Not big deal but it would be nice if each time I opened a session the SIR appeared just as I left it. Can it be done??

4. I still am working on my mild distortion thing and have not corrected it. It is driving me crazy!!. Is it possible that the CD burner in my PC is causing it or could the track at once file be going through some other software on my computer before it burns? I know I'm reaching here but I'm kind of running out of ideas. Also could it be the Maxcell CDR's I'm using. They are just run of the mill
cdr's you can buy anywhere. I'm not really hearing the distortion in the mix so I'm looking elswhere for the answer. All of my meters are now out of the red. I have checked the properties on the burned cd's and they do show up as a .cda file. I thinks that is the same as the ones I get from the studio.

5. Is there a limit on the no. of fx's you ca use on a track or an individual limit for example 8 track compressors maximum etc.
or are you only limited by the amount of processing power you have?

6. If I render an individual trak to a new track [ Bass guitar for example] will the new track be renderd with all fx on it as well as edits etc. [ edits , envelopes, etc. but not actually showing up visibly on the new track. ] Similar to a track bounce ?

Many thanks again,
You guys are priceless!!!

Sorry, one more question.
On either the SIR web page or Noisevault page they talked about creating a stereo track if you have mono files, my files are 24 bit
44.1k mono. Should this be done on tracks I'm using reverb on and is it done easily?

Thanks again.

Clarify 2 things please.

1. By saying wavehammer is in the red, exactly what do you mean by that? As farss said, red might merely mean that it's compressing properly, so where is the red you are refering to? Input, output, master mix, gain reduction, etc . . .

2. At what speed are you burning your CDs? I've noticed with some media that audible distortion can be introduced due to excessive error correction taking place on playback caused by problems during record. On older burners, I've found that recording at 2X at the most is best practice. On the newer burners it may not be as critical, but is sure was on my early Plextors using off the shelf media. Interestingly, the most sonically pleasing CDs I've burned were using an older TDK burner at 2X. I don't even know if TDK makes them anymore, but that sure is one great performer for me using the Nero software. The difference is very subtle, but it might be what you are hearing.

What I meant by All meters out of the red was I was overdriving the inputs and outputs of some compressors and wavehammer, I seem to have that under control now. I'm new to Vegas [ and all software audio mixing stuff, ] which is why I have so many questions. I had another thing happen this weekend after hours of mixing I got a Vegas error and it asked me if I wanted to restore the file and said I sould rename it ASAP. I clicked yes, it restored, I went back to work and in a short while Vegas closed with no warning and Ilost the .veg file. When I renamed it I wasn't thinking and I did not put a .veg after the title. I hope that was my only mistake as it is easily corrected in the future. I was working with SIR impulse reverbs and was adding
them to multiple drum tracks when this happened. Maybe this is a NO NO, I'm not sure if you can add muliple SIR's to different tracks with different tracks without a conflict. Any help is appreciated.

Good luck with your projects. Sounds like you are really grabbing hold and taking off.

For your question about SIR and stereo, perhaps the page you were mentioning relates to a checkbox in the impulse implementation screen that says "Convert Mono to Stereo". I'm not sure what it does, but I know it's there.

i was just beefing up a video of a choral group at our church last night by using one of the church impulses. I hadn't messed with impulses much before now, but it sure made that recording sound so much more realistic and lively. That's when I noticed that checkbox. I need to play with impulses more.

Good luck and have fun.
