Sometime ago, I installed another 512MB of RAM, making for 1GB. However, when I right-click on "My Computer" and select "Properties" it only shows 512MB.
Did I do something wrong or omit a step somewhere along the way in the installation?
Sounds like the RAM was installed incorrectly - easy to do, those sticks can be a real bear sometimes. I'd power down and reseat the stick; then boot into BIOS and verify that your BIOS sees the additional memory.
Also check how your original 512 was provided - many motherboards have restrictions on how you add - for example, if you've got slots for 4 sticks and your original 512 was done as 2 sticks of 256, the MB may require that additional memory be added as a pair of sticks.

If reseating doesn't work, exchange the slots too. I had some 256 sticks that would only work if they were in a particular order.
Well, aren't I the dope!? (Yeah, yeah, yeah.., so what else is new, right?)
I opened up the computer and there was only 512MB of RAM in there. I would have sworn that I had upgraded the RAM a year or so ago. Getting old is no fun.
I know you've solved it, but to add to others' possibilities... some motherboards may need a BIOS update to correctly report the RAM (I came across a PC Chips/ECS board that needed an update).
On the subject of memory, I am in the process of upgrading from 1GB to 2GB. I have an Asus A8V m/b with an X2 processor, and when I built it last fall I threw in 2x512MB sticks. Well, 1GB is plenty for most tasks (I know, because I have the little RamPage free-memory monitor sitting in the System Tray), but I discovered over the past few weeks that each instance of DeShaker eats up 400MB during Pass 2! I was trying to run two instances of DeShaker at once and the system would slow to a crawl due to disk file swapping. So, I bought an extra 1GB from NewEgg.
Threw it in and everything worked great--for an hour. Turns out that the A8V is a great board, but with a few quirks. One of them is that it freaks when running 4 memory slots with particular processors, one of them being--you guessed it.
So I've ordered 2x1GB memory sticks to replace everything. The memory I had just bought is up for sale on eBay. Turns out that I had tossed the packaging once I saw it was initially working. Dumb.
