Not exactly answering your question, but you know about http://firefogg.org , don't you? Accessible via Firefox to transcode to WebM.

What is FireFogg?

"What is FireFogg?"I'll give this a shot - the long winded version.

Arguably, HTML5 is the future of video delivery on the web. The problem is there is spotty browser support for HTML5 and each browser supports different video/audio codecs. Here's a good website to read up on the entire issue: Dive Into HTML5

One of the Video/Audio formats for HTML5 delivery is the webm format which is containerized VP8 video with Vorbis audio. VP8 video has a history you can read about on the above referenced website, but it is significant in that "VP8 is a royalty-free, modern codec and is not encumbered by any known patents" Currently webm is only supported by the Chrome 6.0+ & Opera 10.6+ browsers, but it is on the "to-do list" for most other browsers.

I know of no way to render webm (or VP8) from Vegas. It's interesting that Vegas will render Vorbis audio in an ogg container.

What does all this have to do with http://firefogg.org ? It is a site that provides an online service to transcode your video to HTML5 video formats - notably webm. I've tried it converting my h.264 clips to webm and it seems to work fine. I can get the webm clips to play via VLC.

Does that help? Or did I just confuse the issue?

If you install the free Google VP8 codec on your machine, it show up as a custom AVI renderer in Vegas (8.0c).

Compared to the level of quality we have been getting with x264 in our other project, VP8 pretty much sucks, as you will see by doing a test render.

FWIW, licensing of h.264 for the web has apparantly been extended indefinitely:

Apparently there's a little more to the story mentioned in the link.

Isn't this a mess?

wow - interesting indeed, jdw. Let's hope it's all a moot point by 2015.

Muscvid - in what template do you find the Google Webm CODEC?
musicvid10 wrote on 7/5/2011, 9:18 PM
Steve, it's not a template, it's a custom AVI video format in the Video tab.
And although it renders in Vegas 8, it wants to give an exception on exit.

Here is one download location for it. I played with it a few months ago and couldn't find a way to demux it and remux to webm. Webm is based on the mkv container. There's a possibility that mkvtoolnix might do it.
