There's a button under the preview window for this.

Do you need it in preferences for scripting purposes? (this post is tagged scripting)

@James-Alburger6094 Yeah I turned this on in the previous versions, it makes it easy to quickly stop while previewing to edit. 😒

You now have! to use J - play backwards, K - Pause & L - Play forward.

I wonder what the thought or reason is?

They seem to fix something but also screw something else up,

In VP21 they thankfully made the delete button red but got rid of the nice prominent blue/red keyframe button 🤷‍♂️

VP20 it's obvious which is keyframed on

But VP21 🔍😒🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

How is it screwed up to move something buried in preferences to the main window where we work?

Ah thanks, that is an on/off button, your comment wasn't clear "There's a button under the preview window for this" I just assumed you were ref to the Play/Pause/Stop buttons, that's ok then I apologise for jumping to assumptions. I still stand by the choice to change keyframe on/off to a tiny little red cross as wrong choice.

Amen and amen. That's a ridiculous place to put this new button (under the playback window). It should be with the other toggle buttons on the tool bar at the bottom of the screen. Better yet, it should be a checkmark in the options. Even better yet, making the spacebar play/pause should be the default. Or, at least, the preference should carry forward when a new version is installed. It was irritating enough that I had to change it every time a version changed. This time, I went to change it in preferences and it wasn't there. Who would've thought that strange button in the playback window was ultimately the answer. (Give me my last hour of search back to my life!). <sheesh> A feature that wasn't asked for, and wasn't wanted is implemented in the most bizarre manner!.

In general, this is definitely not the ultimate answer. What we wanted to do is make this option much more visible for new users since surveys have shown that the default behavior is one of the most confusing quirks for users coming from other NLEs. The reason we have not changed the default is that it would be problematic to change the default in the middle of a release as it would anger a large number of existing users who are accustomed to the default behavior. (We've made this mistake of changing default behavior of a preference mid-release before and have been destroyed by users for doing that.) For the time being, this was the most visible place to have this at (though we could also add the option to the timeline toolbar) before we make the decision whether or not to switch the default in next version of VEGAS Pro.

Thanks for responding. Much appreciated. You probably should not change the default behavior now. That ship has sailed, it should have been changed several versions ago, but it's too late for that now.

But (since I have your attention....) you SHOULD figure out how to carry forward preferences when a new version is installed. And put the button on the toolbar with the other playback buttons (in addition to the playback window).

The help file still references the location of this setting as being under Preferences here and here instead of pointing out the new toggle button. Can that be updated?

As far as the new button goes...
- To me, this is a one-time setting. It is one of the first things I change when downloading a new version, and I never have a need to change it back. Maybe other editors switch back and forth in their workflows? However, based on my needs, it makes more sense to keep it buried in preferences, rather than dedicate a toggle button to it.

- As others have said already, it seems that a better place for the button would be at the bottom of the timeline with the other buttons, rather than in the video preview window. If someone is using a dedicated external display, can they even access this new button easily?

- Also as others have mentioned, I vote to change the default value of this setting in future releases (V22 and beyond)

I will inform our tech writer to update the help files.

James-Alburger wrote on 11/15/2023, 12:20 PM

Instead of updating the Help file to effectively eliminate a needed and familiar function option in Preferences, why not simply duplicate the new button as a familiar choice in preferences-and keep the new button? In other words, have the toggle for play/stop to play/pause in BOTH places. That will satisfy the new screen formatting AND retain functionality for long-time users. And I agree the button belongs at the bottom, not in the preview window. At the very least, if you will only update the Help file, it should note that the play/stop to play/pause option is now a button and where it is located.

Jeez the more I use Vegas the more I want to go back the Magix Video Pro X. This thing constantly crashes, highlights things I didn't, is slow in grabbing a track in that I click on it and have to wait several seconds before I can move it, takes like 30 seconds to undo a cut. I get it appears great but it is so frustrating to make it even go.

@Douglas-McCarron  Please start your own thread if you want help with your problem and provide information starting with Sections B & C of this https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/important-information-required-to-help-you--110457/. This thread is about "Spacebar play/pause instead of play/stop".

I want to follow up on my negative comment earlier. As I dig into Vegas 21 I am finding it is more stable and am starting to like it. So far it has crashed once in a week which is much better.

On the issue of spacebar and F12 which isn't in the options I found that if I click on the Video Preview and then the three dots for visible button set that the spacebar F12 choice is there.

Thank you

Moving the play/pause option is causing enough users problems I don't think it's a user issue but a UI one. VEGAS could really use a "what's new" in this version mini tutorial upon install or glowing labels for what changed upon first launch or just keeping it in preferences.
