John, have you contacted SuperMedia and asked them about this? My experience with them so far has been they are very open and helpful.

Thanks Jay,
Actually, I e-mailed them yesterday and am awaiting their answer. I will post their answer here.

Using Verbatim DVD-R 8x print to hub with no problems. Plextor 716A burner seems to burn nice and deep.

These are the numbers on the discs. I think I popped a couple blood vessels trying to eyeball these numbers.

Just a heads up on this important issue. I didn't post this earlier because I saw infrequent coments, but now it seems that the comments have become the norm.
What I am talking about is Supermediastore (a normally top notch media supply company) selling TYG02 and TYG03 as TYG01. The user results (as you might expect) haven't been as good. I cannot understand this company doing that. They have been so honest up till now.

OK. Supermediastore finally answered my e-mail regarding this problem. Unfortunately they washed their hands of it which makes me think twice about ordering from them again.

Hello John,

I speak to thousands of producers, duplicating houses and sometimes professional videographers like yourself so this feedback in very welcome. I agree that the buyers who emphasize quality will purchase 8X and burn at 4X. As for the TY2 and 3's have heard of manufactueres packing 16X media thats not up to par as
4X from time to time which may explain the performance on those pre 2002 DVD players.
We dont have that kind of pull with Verbatim that can dictate which
media they use as longas it burns sussessfully.

The guy was so clueless, he answered in reference to Verbatim when I clearly questioned their Taiyo Yuden generic bundles.

Here is the response I sent him:

Dear Louis,
This wasn't the response I expected. You basically washed your hands of responsibility for your own false advertising on your website. You also obviously didn't even read the complaint I sent you since you answered in reference to Verbatim when I clearly questioned your Taiyo Yuden generic bundles.
I don't plan to buy from you again and I have posted your clueless response on the forums.

Customer complaints. You know that's a depressing job. How long could you stand working in an environment where people are yelling at you to help them fix problems? You have to imagine that over the phone or through e-mails, some people probably scream and yell if they don't hear what they want to hear right away. After a couple of times, replacing these 'customer complaint' people, they probably have to settle for just about anybody that can handle the pressure and fake their way through that job.

Update:
Louis answered my response and has decided to update their ad to reflect the discrepency. Here was his response:

Hello Again John,

Sorry about the Verbatim reference, I was mitigating a coupon problem for the Verbatims at the time. If you posted negative comments because of this I'll have to live with the consequences. I fully understood that you were referring to the TY's and my answer was sincere about this, we cannot control which product we recieve
from the manufacturer TY01 or others media codes (sorry about this). We are updating the add to reflect this.

Sincerly,

Louis

They have already updated the ad. It now says "MEDIA ID: TYG01/TYG02/TYG03"

I wrote backed to Louis and thanked him.

John, thanks for your diligence on this. There are a few DVD threads going on now, and my head is starting to spin (more than usual) - what is the difference between TYG01/TYG02/TYG03?

I have 4x and 8x burners and most always burn at 4x if that makes a difference.

thanks,
David

Most of us have found that 4X media has better compatibility with players than faster media has. The best results have come from Taiyo Yuden TYG01 and Ritek G04, but they are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. Supermedia Store was selling TYG02 (8X media) and TYG03 (16X media) claiming it was TYG01 (4x media). I don't know why it went on for so long because the comments from people saying they got TYG02 and TYG03 were RIGHT THERE in their ad yet they didn't correct it. That is why I reacted. Now they have finally stated it (as they should have when the first few customers posted)

I normally burn at 1X or 2X with 4X media and get flawless results.

Well, John, at least he wrote you back, rather than writing you off altogether. That says something in their favor. Good for SuperMediaStore!

Steve, if those providing goods and services were more conscientious (dare we say honest? maybe they wouldn't have so many people getting upset with them.

I'm still on Ritek G04 printables burnt on a Pioneer 107. Never had a return from around 200 of them sold. I've just bought the Thailand distributor's entire remaining stock of 225.

When they run out I haven't a clue what I'll do as I can't even get an answer out of the Thailand Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim dealers. What's are the views on Ritek G05 burnt at 4x in a Pioneer 107?

By the way the G04's don't like the new Pioneer 110 burner.

With all the Ritek G04 talk, what do ya'll know about their Arita brand?

EDIT: There's info on that in this thread, and others. I shoulda searched first...

I have been using Phillips 8X and Sony 8X with all DVD-R construction with no issues.

Burn rate seems to have little or not impact on compatibility. The newer burners and media seems to have gotten beyond the burn it slow requirement. I remember having to disconnect from the net, shut down virus scanning and burn at 1X only to get reliable repeatable productions.

I need to buy DVD-R’s for my Pioneer 110. Does anyone who has this burner have any recommendations? Should I go with the G05’s instead?

Best Buy has 100 FujiFilm +R DVDs on sale for $30 this week. They also have 100 FujiFilm CD-R's on sale for $18. If they packages say "Made in Japan," they should be Taiyo Yuden media. TY media has been very reliable for me.

Sometimes they mix them on the shelves. A quick way to tell with Fuji media is the bottom edge of the spindle. If it is smooth it is made in Taiwan. If it has ridges all the way around it is Made in Japan.

I ordered 300 Maxell 4X media from cdrdvdmedia.com..AKA Meritline.
I just received the shipment today. They sent Made in Taiwan Maxell 8X media which is garbage. They all seem to be doing the same thing now. Arbitrarily sending 8X or 16X when you order 4X. The future does not look rosy for us in terms of returned discs from customers.

Yes,
I spoke to Jim in the returns dept and he checked with the warehouse. They told him they only carry Arita (Ritek) in 4X media. They told him all the manufacturers are sending 8X and 16X media now. He issued a call tag to return the package.
They haven't noted any of this on their website as they have several types of 4X media listed.
I am getting really discouraged with all of this. The manufacturers aren't concerned about compatibility. I think their target market are bootleggers and kids personally.

I'm not sure how their prices compare, but I've bought several 100 disks from them and have had good results.

Prodisk 8X with printable surface to the hub.
