What's the best computer configuration to edit on vegas pro ?

Anvil wrote on 6/29/2023, 7:36 AM

I am currently editing on an alienware which has this configuration:

CPU
    Intel Core i7 9700 @ 3.00GHz
    Coffee Lake 14nm Technology
RAM
    16,0 Go Dual-Channel Unknown @ 1329MHz (18-18-18-43)
Graphics
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER (Dell)

I can work on long projects of 1080p 60fps without problem but as soon as I push on 2k or 4k it drags a lot

I would like to buy a pc to work but I don't know if a desktop pc with an i9 for example and better ram is better than a gaming pc with a good graphics card ?

thank you !

What is "best" is unanswerable, only good enough for a given purpose.

The 9700 is not the K model so lacks an Intel iGPU, yes?

I'd start not with hardware but with media. What's the main type of media that you edit and have problems with, and can you share MediaInfo for it? https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

You may be able to convert it a more edit friendly format and avoid problems without spending any money.

You can try the benchmarks in my signature and see how your current system compares against others for timeline playback and render performance. That could give an idea how different CPUs or GPUs would do.

I also have a similar GPU to you but much faster CPU (i5-13600K) and can test it with media similar to what you are using if you like.

The recommended specifications for Vegas Pro 20 are:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/specifications/#productMenu

For 4K, your RAM is half the recommended size.

Timeline performance depends very much on your video media. For example, phone video often performs badly in Vegas Pro because phones mostly use a variable frame rate (VFR) rather than a constant frame rate (CFR), so transcoding VFR to CFR is highly recommended.

I've got an Alienware desktop (see my signature for specs) but timeline performance depends not only on the media on the timeline but also the preview window quality selection as well as any FX added to video events on the timeline - some 3rd party FX can slow even the highest spec'd computers down to a snail's pace.

May I prevail upon the collective wisdom of the community to comment on this proposed computer configuration for the best editing experience in Vegas Pro software? Please let me know if my thinking is off base or not. Many thanks in advance. I have a subscription to Vegas Pro and am currently editing on an old, lagging computer.

@Marc-Gold Hi,

If you want a guide as to how other's PC's perform have a look at @RogerS Signature, there's a link to VEGAS 4K "sample project" benchmark, In the link that opens there's a spreadsheet showing peoples PCs & how past they render the benchmark test.

Be careful about how you spend your money, the most expensive or biggest isn't always the best, I need to do the test again & upload my results but last time I tried it I was roughly 30th in that list, my specs are in my signature.

Hi, and thanks for your info. Yes, I am looking to build a new editing computer for Vegas Pro.

RogerS wrote on 5/10/2024, 7:52 PM

Is that power supply enough for such a CPU and GPU? Otherwise it's a high end and likely very expensive system.
