When saving audio on external editor it says that file is in use.

  1. Choose audio clip from timeline
  2. With mouse, choose "Open copy in audio editor"
  3. On audio editor, do some edit and try save (Goldwave used here).

-> Goldwave says that audio file is in in use.

  1. Switch back to Vegas (alt + tab).
  2. Choose something else from timeline. Yellow rectangle disappears around audio clip being edited.
  3. Switch back to audio editor.
  4. Try saving again.

-> Save is successful.

Expected behavior:

When Vegas launches external audio editor, it releases file.

Audio editing seems to be possible only when channels (2 ch stereo file) are not combined on Vegas (mouse right click .. channels / both). If trying to edit 'combined' audio, sound is weird.

Build tested: Vegas 20 build 326.

Yes, I've had that happen from time-to-time over many years when using Sound Forge Pro as Vegas Pro's preferred audio editor. It hasn't happened for a while and the yellow rectangle seems to be new as I don't recall it popping up in the past. Sometimes, it even took clicking several times elsewhere on the timeline before the save was able to be performed.

I can't comment on Channels/Combined as I've only ever had the default Channels/Both applied.
