Which graphics card for vegas 12?

Hello everyone. I want to get a graphics card upgrade but not completely sure about the best one for video editing and making the most of cuda with my processor. I have a intel quad q8300 2.5ghz processor and currently have a GeForce GT 420 card installed. This seems OK (if I was gaming) but loading, editing and rendering seems to take a while. I may want to improve the processor and am open to suggestions there. I have just purchased a new video camera which only has a dv usb 2.0 connection to PC, although I am sure there is a lead to better suit speed and the card it will plug into. I wondered if the GT 640 was a nice upgrade as it seems to have better cuda capabilities. I am not a gamer, but I just need a nice card for video editing and rendering etc. any help is very much appreciated.

Vegas Pro's GPU acceleration code was written a long time ago and is therefore optimised for older cards. The AMD HD 6970 and the Nvidia GTX-580 seem to be fastest for VP12 and VP13. I understand that more recent cards than either of these are slower. If you go for the Nvidia then use the old 296.10 driver or try a later driver with OldSmoke's tweak.

Do you think either would really make a dramatic difference to my system and rendering speeds etc. I must admit since loading vegas 12 it has crashed a few times and I did update the driver on my current card - I might have to roll back again.

Oh yes it will, even on your system. If you like Nvidia, get a GTX580 off eBay, they go for around 120-150.

The AMD has good reviews too? I am not toally tied to NVIDIA. Which one would you choose? Sorry to put you on the spot!

I depends on your final output. On my system, CUDA support for MC AVC is great and fast with my GTX580. If you do more third party plug-ins like those from NewBlue and Boris, the HD6970 might be a better choice.

Edit:
You can connect more monitors to the HD6970 (up to four) then to a GTX580 (2max).

To be honest my output is an MP4 to the client and then either 1080 or 720 p as HD upload to YT or vimeo - that's it. They are usually 2-6 mins long only. I do product demo and how to videos + event videos. I am not worried about monitors.

ASUS or EVGA for me. ASUS are mostly non-reference and its harder to get GOU coolers. EVGA are usually reference design and the one with the EK cooler looks just right provided you have already a custom water-cooling system or intend to put one in your system. I have both cards and cpu water-cooled and it does make a big difference in terms of stability; and I can OC my system.

Edit:
EK still sells the single PC slot mounting bracket which makes the card even slimmer.
