Why my Vegas Pro 19 preview so laggy while compare to Premiere 2022

ahshing wrote on 3/13/2022, 10:19 AM

Hello everybody, I’m a VP19 user and I never succeeded to preview the clips smoothly with the XAVC-HS/XAVC-SI format, I always thought that was my computer’s problem. However today I tried to load the clips into the Premiere 2022 and the playback rate was smooth as silk, so what was the problems from Vegas Pro? Can I have a chance to edit those formats smoothly from that?

My computer’s spec: i7 10870H/RTX3060/32GB ram
Vegas Pro 19 build 532

The sample clips:
XAVC-HS 4K 24P (please select the original)

First read Vegas Pro FAQ and troubleshooting and **IMPORTANT!** - INFORMATION REQUIRED TO HELP YOU

I had tried all possible solutions from the faq, and the windows/vegas pro were newly installed.
Still no luck 😔

It happens due to the lack of GPU support for XAVC (especially XAVC Long GOP) format.

I'd give you comparative results from my machine, but access to the sample file locks me out.

Yep same here, the first one, 4K 24P, i tried copying the link to another browser, same thing, access denied,

the second one 4K 60P showed but wouldn't play, download was really slow & only got to 1 on the 3.5GB download,

Try putting the in a zipped folder on Google Drive - Share with anyone that has the link,

Former user wrote on 3/13/2022, 4:31 PM

I could only try your AVC 422 4K, as that's the only upload that was successful, Premiere playback 60fps, Vegas about 15 - 20fps

It looks to me that Vegas is maxing about 11 logical cores, approx 6 physical cores, and partial use of other cores, while Premiere evenly uses all cores. I think Vegas is running out of CPU it can access. It also doesn't use the GPU for decoding as well as Premiere. I'd be interested to see how well that file plays on a 12th gen Intel with it's better IPC. If it is true, and Vegas can only utilize fully 6 cores then that should favor 12gen Intel.

In the video below, Video Encode is the Geforce Screen Capture, so these are without screen recording

@Former user That is interesting, You have no problems at all playing back. Do you still have VP18(527) installed, and see if playback is the same?

Maybe a 16core Ryzen 5950 could play this just fine, but not 5900. When I change project settings to 50fps, and conform file to 50fps it plays back as easily as your 60fps. So this means Vegas can use more cores I guess but the poster's 8core and my 12core is not enough, but it is enough for Premiere

Former user wrote on 3/13/2022, 7:05 PM

@Former user No sorry i formatted this PC last yr, re-installed windows & only the programs i needed,

Yeah interesting, you're PC isn't a million miles away from mine, i tried cutting the video up & moving bits around, it played as well as you saw 🤷‍♂️ I know mine is 32core but it isn't even pushing it, ticking along at 20% on the CPU, if there's a prob with Vegas or the media it shows so I don't know tho 🤷‍♂️

Former user wrote on 3/13/2022, 7:19 PM

@Former user at 50fps project (media conformed to 50fps) 35% CPU average, 50fps playback but 60fps project (60fps media) CPU goes through the roof, and playback terrible. Strange. Would like to see others try this file, but test file being 3.4gb some may not wish to.

@Former user Yeah, i've got super fast fibre broadband but download still took 5mins,

@Former user How was your Vegas Pro GPU settings? Looks like your VP19 is able to utilize the GPU decode for the XAVCS All-I properly which I've never been able to do😮

Can you try what I did, and see how your computer plays back your 60fps test file on a 50fps timeline, with file conformed to 50fps (very slight slow motion) . Would be interesting to see if you also have no problem with playback at 50fps as well, it's only playing back at 60fps causes the problem with ALL-I

@ahshing My pc is fine with the 60p one but doesn't like the 24p or the 120p

So even your machine cannot handle the XAVCS-HS(HEVC) from the VP19?

Former user wrote on 3/13/2022, 8:21 PM

@ahshing I tried with the different options in File IO, no change or improvement,

Former user wrote on 3/13/2022, 8:41 PM

@ahshing Add Proxy - Preview (Full) they work fine & are editable 👍 (Legacy AVC & HEVC unticked in File IO)

Do you feel much slower proxy rendering speed compare with H264 format files?

Former user wrote on 3/13/2022, 8:56 PM

@ahshing Sorry i can't say, i very rarely create proxies 🤷‍♂️

PS i just created proxy on a few 3840x2160 4k AVC & yes your files are a bit slower

ahshing wrote on 3/14/2022, 1:50 AM

One more question:

I saw someone on the facebook said that should be better to use different gpu for the encoder/decoder.

Such as my pc, I was told that I should use the RTX3060 nvenc for video processing and Intel QSV (as default option of Vegas) for video decoding. Is that true? Since I used the Intel QSV for video decoding I found the playback rate is slower than the nvidia NVDEC a bit, so I wonder what should I use.

Thank you!

RogerS wrote on 3/14/2022, 2:11 AM

I don't think there's any reason to be different for the sake of it, but Intel QSV is the default in Vegas for a reason and is compatible with the most types of files. If with your particular media and CPU/iGPU and GPU you find a better combination, feel free to use it. You can change back to defaults if you start working on a different project with different media.

In the case of HEVC 4:2:2 10-bit and your 10th generation Intel CPU it doesn't really matter- you need to use proxy files in Vegas.

Do you own the a7sIII, and if so what media settings and framerates do you actually use with it? You've linked to a few different ones with files that were shot with different settings.

Oh wow you should be Roger that replied me at the Vegas editor hub? Nice to meet you again!

Yes I have the a7sIII and I keep using XAVC-S 10bit 422 for my videos, with the wedding and documentary projects they used so much storage space, so I always wonder if I can switch to XAVC-HS and the Vegas Pro can handle it well.
