Windows Update Breaks Movie Studio 17 Platinum, File I/O Manager

CalmBiker wrote on 1/23/2021, 6:28 AM

I'm using version 17.0 of Movie Studio, build number 204 on an HP Elitebook, Core i7-7600U 16GB RAM with Intel on-board graphics. It works perfectly on Windows 10 version 1909.

Windows 10 is forcing an update to version 20H2. After the update, Movie Studio no longer loads, crashing during the splash screen at "Creating File I/O Manager".

I've looked all over the web for answers and I've done the following:

  • Turned the machine off and on again
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled Movie Studio
  • Looked for file I/O and file surrogate processes to kill (that weren't there)
  • Reinstalled video drivers
  • Reinstalled QuickTime
  • Tried Movie Studio with every compatibility option on the EXE

None of these worked. What did work was to revert the Windows to the previous version and then uninstall Movie Studio and reinstall it. The problem is a few days later, Windows forces the update to 20H2 again and breaks Movie Studio all over again.

Has anyone had this issue and managed to resolve it?

Try a complete reset of the program, exactly following this advice : https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/

Thanks, as soon as Windows is updated again I'll give that a try.

OK, Windows updated again and broke Movie Studio again. I tried the link and held Ctrl/Shift whilst starting Movie Studio. Movie Studio asked for admin permissions, which I granted, then it just crashed again.

Tried another thing that I found in the forums. I renamed the file, So4Reader.dll to _So4Reader.dll in C:\Program Files\VEGAS\Movie Studio Platinum 17.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\so4compoundplug.

The start sequence now passes the Creating File I/O point but fails a little later at "Initializing GPU-Accelerated Video Processing".

To get more help you have to show here

- exactly Processor number ( Core I7 is not enough)
- exact drivernumber for your Graphic Driver

Hi j-v,

the processor is a Core i7-7600U. Video driver is Intel HD Graphic 620, v27.20.100.8189. I can't get to Options because Movie Studio won't launch unfortunately.

Try to download and install the latest driver for your Intel 620 by this : https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/96551/Intel-HD-Graphics-620

Hi j-v,

that didn't seem to help either unfortunately. I suspect something in the Windows update process is creating some incompatibility. I've given up and reinstalled Windows 10 from the latest available image and reinstalled Movie Studio as the first software. This seems to have done the trick. Hopefully, as I add my other software no compatibility issues will return.

Thank you for your help!
