Which is it? Old with a young stupid brain or Old with a young active mind?

an older brain reacts slower, doesn't work as well as a younger brain. But the "age" of the brain reflects this, not the physical age.

I have 9 & 13 yr. old daughters (and a wife that's 10 yrs.younger than me) to keep me young.
Oops, I just gave away my wife's age and that's something that's not allowed :-)

I think what it is based on is they think that younger brains can more easily recognize counts and spatial relationships. There was a recent article that most people can make an 'automatic' count when there are about 5 things but younger people can count more objects 'automatically'. I think it was just one study though and I'm not sure it actually has any credence. There has to be lower limit...

As the oldest fart here, I have to tell you that this "game" is based on an intelligence training given to British agents and is about 150 years old. You can see a snippet of this in the motion picture "Kim," a story by Rudyard Kipling which was made into a movie in the 30's starring Errol Flynn.

In the movie, the trainer (a shopkeeper) asks the young Kim if he is ready to play the "game." So he brings out a tray which is covered with a cloth. He removes the cloth for just a couple of seconds, revealing a bunch of different objects, usually stones. Then the cloth is put back and Kim is asked what he saw. He must describe all the objects on the tray precisely. And again the next day!

Because an intelligence officer has to quicky take in a situation..how many horses, lancers, machine guns, etc., this training allows him to do that. He trains his mind visually to notice everything and make a mental picture of it.

An intelligencer officer who operated behind enemy lines was said to be playing the "Great game."

A variation of this was used in the movie "A Bright and Shining Moment" with Melanie Griffith.

Video editors come by this naturally--if you're a good editor--because you have to visualy remember where a clip with a certain piece of business is. You have to keep the entire production constantly visible in your mind so you can put it together properly.
I know, I know, we have markers for that now, but in the old days you had to work quickly and keep everything in your mind.

Now, think what it was like (and I know this from experience) to work with a movieola and you have all these film clips haning on hooks by the film bin. Some jigsaw puzzle.

Anyway, that's the way it was...
