A Route Animation Tool for VegasPro19 - Suggestions?

Grazie wrote on 11/3/2021, 2:52 AM

I've got a wiggly route that is Eastwards, mostly horizontal, but then springs up and takes a Northern route.

Tried so far:

1 - Mask: Moving Mask - ugh . . . tortuous . .

2 - Transition: Transition using Linear Wipe is good for the East Route but then the swing into Northern, it gets really silly!

I vaguely remember Douglas Spotted Eagle having a clever Composite method, but for the life of me, I can't find it, here or the COW.

I've briefly noted this one: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/route-animation-plugin-for-vegas-pro-by-peter-p-with-tutorial--116423/ I need something more straightforward.

So, all suggestions are taken seriously.

If you've got HitFilm Pro, HFP provides a much better solution to route animations (IMO anyway). Using the Neon Path FX, the route path can be set in HFP's preview window using splines (which can easily be changed to curved splines). The settings for Neon Path aren't all that intuitive but once the look is achieved, the final result is quite good. Being a neon FX, the route path is a neon look with an inner color of your choice and an outer glow color also of your choice. The one thing I don't like so much about it is that as the path progresses, the earlier parts of the path starts to progressively decay. I haven't found a way to overcome that - the problem probably lies with the operator 😉.

The render from HFP can then be imported into Vegas Pro. An example:

Unfortunately, I don't think that there are any YT tutorials about using the Neon Path FX for route animation.

HitFilm Express (free) doesn't have Neon Path as a standard inclusion but can it be bought as an add-on for around $20 USD.

I've seen some consumer NLEs offer route animation (e.g. Corel VideoStudio some years ago) but they're rather tacky because they always seem to require a cartoonish icon of a car, airplane or boat to be at the head of the moving track. For me - yuk!

The very best route animation I've seen are the 3D route paths created by Télévision Française for showing the stages of Le Tour de France at the beginning of the TdF daily telecasts usually each July. But I don't think that they're done with $100 plugin.

http://www.routegenerator.net/index.html is a carton version that uses Google maps, and cartoon vehicles, but at least it's free.

@Dexcon & @lan-mLMC Terrific ideas and truly Pro stuff.

@Grazie

Hi,

Magix has Travel Maps that comes with Movie Edit Pro, Video Pro X and PhotoStory, including an SAL, but cannot be purchased separately. It's difficult to beat except by Vasco da Gama (top of the line). Too bad that it doesn't come with Vegas.

On this page, scroll down till you see Travel Maps and watch the video.

Here is a sample output that I did up quickly for someone.

You could buy the least expensive Magix program that includes Travel Maps. BTW, the "upgrade" to Movie Studio 18 Platinum or Suite comes with Travel Maps. Again, scroll down till you find it.

Vegas Pro 18 Edit, Vegas Movie Studio 16 Platinum, Magix Video Pro X16, Magix Movie Studio Platinum 2024, Xara Designer Pro X19, Samplitude Pro X8 Suite, Music Maker 2025 Premium, SF Audio Cleaning Lab 4, Sound Forge Pro 16 and more.

@john-brown - Anyways: THANK YOU! @Den24601 Suggestion is great. No fiddle faffing with other programs.

If you happen to have Heroglyph by Prodad, it also has a route tool built in that I love to use.

@Grazie search here on the forum for route animation. Fellow member Peter p alias elCutty introduced a Route Animation plugin for Vegas several years ago. This plugin still works for VP19.

@walter-i. - Nope, I don't.

Here are a couple of demos of maps I've created using Google Earth and Photoshop (You could probably use other editors.)

And a link to the thread that describes how it's done.

You Guys are just soooo amazing!

It's been a tortuous Route in terms of my grasping the process - thank you all for showing me such great support.

OK, in terms of the winning "Grazie-Proof" process, it is:

1 - SG from Gmaps.

2 - Prepare Map in PSP.

3 - Load Map into RouteGenerator.

4 - Plot Route, and this can be in ANY direction and even crisscrossing a Route.

5 - Set Time Duration

6 - Set CODEC - MagicYUV here.

7 - Set Frame Rate and other options - nice!

8 - Import my Travelling Icon, this is my own "Rolled-Me-Own", RV we used, with our BIG heads poking through Wind Shields. 😂

9 - Render out to AVI.

DONE!

@Grazie as you were asking for a Vegas route generating tool and not for an external tool, I didn't mention my favourite map/route generation tool, which is Mapcreator from Primap.

@Grazie as you were asking for a Vegas route generating tool and not for an external tool,

@3POINT - I wanted to be able to generate a Route. As I’m working in VP19 and exploring just what is available, others jumped in and assisted. I never thought I should’ve stipulated ONLY the VP tools. But hey!

I didn't mention my favourite map/route generation tool, which is Mapcreator from Primap.

@3POINT - Just had a quick look and I’ll keep it in mind. Thank you. This RouteGenerator is free.

@wwaag - Oh, thank you, but it isn’t good enough to share on this Pro forum.

Maybe also not good enough to share on this Pro forum, but good enough for me, an alternative route animation of my last year river cruise (not with an animated route line but with animated waypoints) . Map generated with Mapcreator and the animation created with my other NLE. But the same could be done with Vegas.

wwaag wrote on 11/6/2021, 2:33 PM

@3POINT

Not an animation, but I for one, really like it.
