Sometimes resetting helps with such indefinable problems.
Please do not forget to clear the cache as well.

There are more than a few audio FX bypass switches including the automation's mute. Look close at the FX, events, track and bus settings.

Resetting VP may fix it but all your VP custom settings will be reverted back to the 'factory' default. I do not think a reset will change the project settings, so if the mutes are set in the project, resetting would not un-mute the audio FX on events, tracks, buses, ect. The Fx 'sends' could be down as well if your using the insert mode for reverb, echos and such.

Where in the FX, events, track and bus settings, can I find any indication of this? I'm using sony vegas 14 for this btw.
