Audio Preview and Render issues V14 and V15

mmchael wrote on 10/4/2017, 1:22 AM

Try to preview a project with audio in V14 and V15 and it cuts in and out - like very bad stuttering.

Tried a new project and inserted just the audio file (pure WAVE file) and this is what I see. The blocks are blank whereas the first part is the only part that plays.

If I open the audio file in a media player it plays fine with no issues. I tried turning off 5.1, changing different audio preview devices etc. No change.

How was the file created (what camera or app)?

How many channels are you expecting to see in that file?

Does it work OK in any other programs?

Could you post the MediaInfo for the file, and maybe share a sample WAV file?

Here is a screen recording (from camtasia) of the issue and a sample Wave file. All worked fine not so long ago. An mp3 version works ok. Here is a link to the wave file which is 59MB

This is 15 but also happens in V14 exactly the same.

thank you

Thanks. It plays OK for me in VP13, 14 and 15.

Your WAV file is 44,100Hz, 32 Bit (IEEE Float). That format has other issues in Vegas. What happens if you change the sample rate of the project to 48,000 Hz?

Did you render this from Audition on a Mac, like the MediaInfo says? You could try rendering or converting the file to regular PCM 24bit WAV. If you can't do that in Vegas or Audition, you should be able to do it in the free Audacity.

If none of that helps...

What sound card are you using?

What audio device do you have set in Preferences > Audio?

What version of Windows are you running?

I'll try that re render tomorrow and give it a go.

I did try changing to 48K,Hz

Realtek Audio Card and also tried a UR22 - both tried setting in Preferences Audio and Win 7 64B

It all worked fine in V14 only a few months ago.

Maybe some Windows update or driver update has messed things up in the meantime. Have you installed any other audio software?

How about if you move the file to a different drive?

Also, you might consider recording/rendering mono for a vocal track (unless the narrator is Futakuchi-onna). Identical waveforms on each channel indicate that the mic is mono. Having said that, it doesn't really matter using stereo if the final render is going to be stereo.

Thank you Nick.

I figured out it was the drive. I had a now 3 year old USB 3 drive. I transferred to a new drive and it works perfectly.

Thank you for the tip on the voice over media settings. I will do that.

"Identical wave forms on each channel indicate that the mic is mono. Having said that, it doesn't really matter using stereo if the final render is going to be stereo".

Yes, dual mono (or stereo) is totally unnecessary for dialog. More efficient as well, a single channel PCM (.wav) is half the size of a two-channel file. And as Nick stated it will be fed to both L&R in a stereo audio render anyway (provided it's panned to center, which is the default for single channel files).
