Benchmark Roundup w/ProRes

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 5/12/2021, 2:22 AM

Having just updated Vegas 18 to build 527 and Vegas 17 to build 455, I thought I'd benchmark them. And decided to do a ProRes version of RedCar while I was at it.

Generally, v17 is a slight bit quicker on the 4K Sample Project and the Red Car with original HD media. And moderately quicker rendering substitute 4K avc and hevc media. But v18 using the Apple licensed ProRes library is over 3x faster than v17 when 10-bit 4K ProRes422 media is substituted into the original Red Car benchmark... and that's without the benefit of any hardware decoding assistance.

I haven't been following the benchmark thread so...

You're rendering to AVC from prores source, correct?

System 1:

Windows 10
i9-10850K 10 Core
128.0G RAM
Nvidia RTX 3060 Studio driver [most likely latest]
Resolution        3840 x 2160 x 60 hertz
Video Memory 12G GDDR5

System 2:

Lenovo Yoga 720
Core i7-7700 2.8Ghz quad core, 8 logical
16G ram
Intel HD 630 gpu 1G vram
Nvidia GTX 1050 gpu 2G vram

Yes. The Red Car bench was originally supplied with 1080p 29.97 media and rendered to a 1080p frame. The Sample Project numbers, however, are at it's native 25fps. I rendered all with Magix AVC using VCE. I usually also render with MC, QSV, and NVenc for comparison but only did VCE here because it was quick and easy... might start using QSV or NVenc more if I get more high end boards. I made the ProRes clip from the original 50mbps RedCar XDcam 422 mfx clip using the ProRes422 template in VP18 build 527 adding a smidgen of sharpening (.050), not because it needed it, but so all the zeros in the upscaled clip would populate with something and not compress out so readily. Then did a Replace in the Project Media screen for the original clips 1, 2, and 3. I'd post the whole thing but that clip came out to be 21gb (19gb zipped) which exceeds my 15gb google drive space. Here's the media info:

Vegas 18 seems to have raised performance with Nvidia graphics compared to v17! Just the opposite of what my benches show above for AMD boards. Noticed it first in my Dell xps-15 laptop so I went back and retested my Xeon with an Nvidia gtx1660 and observed the same trend. Curiously, I also noticed the gtx1660 may not be nearly as powerful as the 5700xt generally, but out-performs it on decoding. These both use the Magix AVC NVenc preset for rendering.
