best flickering reduction/removal plugin for Vegas

marcinzm wrote on 8/16/2022, 1:12 PM

Hello,

Can you share with me the best flickering reduction/removal plugin for Vegas? This built in Vegas is not good as I'd like it to be.
I was videoshooting a wedding, and even I had good shutter speed, the flickering was shown on the video.

I don`t know what caused the issue. Could be cheap LED lights? Can you write me what could cause this filckering effect on raw videos?

Can you write me how to successfuly remove the flickering effect from raw video without blurring effect? Are there any free plugins for it which cause do the great job?

I have Vegas Pro 20 on Windows 10 Home.

Regards

M.

I see the flicker coming and going, which tells me you have auto shutter speed enabled... you want it to be manual.. and depending on what country you live in, the shutter speed needed to eliminate the flicker in-camera will be different. In the US, it's 1/60 or multiples of it, as our electricity alternates 60 times per second. Cheap LED lights don't pulse any faster than this, so they are a nightmare for cameras. Wedding DJs and decorators typically buy cheap LEDs.

Unfortunately, I'm not aware of a good method to remove this in post.

@fr0sty No, you are partialy wrong. I did not have auto shutter speed enabled on auto. I always shot on manual settings and I always keep the settings 1/100s 50p, because I know the basics how important is shutter speed in that case. I know that in the USA I should shot 1/120s 60p, but in my country I must shot 1/100s 50p, because i live in Europe where PAL system is active.

I noticed that when the was a speech on wedding, the lamps were directed up and the flickering effect was not shown on my video shots in these parts, when there be wedding dance the leds are directed on 45 degrees angle and were moving and then flickering effect occurred.

I know that it is possible to remove, because I saw some posts on Vegas Pro forum but from Resolve18, which is not Vegas option. Can you advise me some effective plugin for Vegas Pro 20.

@marcinzm Hi, this is an interesting one for me as i'm just consulted with Boris about flickering coming from florescent lights, but yours looks more like a sort of banding, Boris man also suggested their flicker fixer was good for auto-iris flicker, I'm not really sure what that is,

The person i spoke with on Boris forum was PeterMcAuley - Senior Product Manager, I downloaded the flickering clip on Google Drive & he had a look n came back with his choice of presets, within an hr or 2, he's in LA n I'm in the UK 😁

If you can share that orig on Google drive I'll have a go with the fxs i have & i'm sure others will try it out 👍

This is a viideo i put on YT when i was asking for his advice, i later shared the orig on Google as i say

PS I've screen captured your vid above but the orig unaltered would be better, shared on GoogleDrive or another file sharing site.

I noticed that when the was a speech on wedding, the lamps were directed up and the flickering effect was not shown on my video shots in these parts, when there be wedding dance the leds are directed on 45 degrees angle and were moving and then flickering effect occurred.

In either case, setting your shutter to multiples of 25 should solve the issue... No idea why yours is flickering if that is the case... I've never had any LED flicker on me once I got the right shutter speed dialed in. For me, it's either 1/40 or 1/60 that works best, so experiment with different speeds to see which one works for you. Maybe test a few shots when you arrive at the event, bring a preview monitor along to view them on (it can be very difficult to see it sometimes, on smaller screens), and experiment with the settings until you get it dialed in.

It's possible those lights flicker at a non-standard rate and that is causing issues... the solution is finding that shutter speed sweet spot.

@joelsonforte.br Yes, the result is good, but unfortunately the cost of purchase is too high for me. Do you have any alternatives for it which are as good as RevisionFX Deflicker?

@marcinzm Hi, thanks for the file, sorry but at the moment i can't improve it much without blurring the image or creating a lot of ghosting with the flicker fixing plugins i have, I have Boris Continuum & Sapphire, there's a couple of Debanding fxs too in the list but not much joy with them either, I've added a request on the post i've got on Boris forum to see if in the myriad of fxs i have there's has a solution, I'll let you know but at least this'll be a plugin or two you could cross off your list,

this is what i have for flicker.

@marcinzm, A good solution for you is to download the free version of Davince Resolve and use the Deflicker plugin. Results are identical to ReVisionFX Deflicker. Another option is to duplicate the video track, shift as many frames as necessary and adjust the opacity to reduce flicker. All of this is shown in the video below.

@Former user I used ReVisionFX Deflicker on your video and rendered a 1920x1080p 30p file using Voukoder in Vegas. The video was perfect! But I prefer you to see and draw your own conclusions. You can download the file from the link below:

@joelsonforte.br Thankyou, yeah i'm really impressed with that, 👍 this flickering has happened for yrs in my shed with the florescent lights, i'm going to swap the lights for LED's but i get the flickering sometimes when filming in peoples houses, I ignored it & uploaded to YT with the flicker, pointless filming in 4k then adding an fx that blurs the image,

When discussing with Boris & them playing with the same file of mine i shared that you tried, they're conclusion was Temporal YCC preset in BCC Flicker Fixer, it's pretty good but does blur the image in parts a little, you can see the edge of the ply & the pattern in the grain is smudged a bit,

But your RevisionFX version is a lot better, can't fault that, it'd be hard to beat 👍

Ya know what this means, looks like i'm spending some money 😂😂😂🤸‍♂️🤸‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Also work on dialing in that shutter speed to get around the flicker to begin with... always best to fix it in-camera. I've found the exact frequency isn't always the best... for instance, in 24p, if I set it to 60 exposures per second, it doesn't always fix it, but 40 often does... even though my US power cycles at 60hz.

@joelsonforte.br Did you try Davinci on the problematic beginning and end of that video. It improves the flicker but in no way does it fix it. If you did try Resolve and you got an identical result to ReVisionFX Deflicker I'd like to hear about your settings.

@Former user for your video Resolve does an extremely good job, nearly perfect but if you try it yourself, try the section where you're lifting up the wooden structure, towards the end there is still flicker, but it's much improved

@joelsonforte.br I decided to purchase RevisionFX Deflicker, because there are no better tools which can handle it.

I see slightly different options than in your plugin (maybe you can lower version):

I am not sure if this plugin is activated sucessfuly, because "activation" button is still active.

Which option of "Time sampling" I should choose for my content?

@marcinzm If you don't see a watermark in the preview, your activation was done correctly.

I don't know why the activation button remains in your version, but it should be normal in the current version. My version is old, I bought it at a time when it wasn't that expensive.

In the configuration I used in your video, I only changed the Time/window (frame +/-) parameter to the value 1. The other parameters remain as they are.

@marcinzm Sorry i discovered this thread a bit too late. But the truly best de-flickering plugin on the market is actually Digital Anarchy Flicker Free.... It solves every flickering source imaginable to a perfection, its much faster than all other options and it is more affordable than the others..... This would have been a far better option than the one you already made!

@marcinzm Here too it is always very slow. Flicker correction consumes a lot of processing. All plugins that fix flicker have similar performance and are generally all very slow even with the GPU enabled.
