Black Screen glitches in Vegas Pro 20 (Help!)

My operating system on my PC is Windows 10 Pro version 22H2, OS build 19045.2364

Processor:  AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor 4.00 GHz.  Installed RAM 64.0 GB.  System type:  64-bit operating system, x64-based processor.

Pen and touch:  No pen and touch.
I'm using and a registered user of Vegas Pro 20.0 (build 214)
GPU is the Radeon RX 580 Series

I’m having a horrible time with a “black screen” glitch displaying in Vegas Pro 20 and then after it’s rendered, the black screen is still there.  I’m a videographer for a radio broadcast in which the host of the program does LIVE streaming.  After the broadcast is over, I download the video and do all the post production on it.  And I’ve been doing this for over 7 years and have used Vegas this whole time. The last broadcast I did just this past Thursday was a 1 hour and 43 minute interview and these “black screens” have been frustrating and totally unacceptable.  Just yesterday, I did a restore on my computer system from an earlier date hoping this problem would go away but as I tested it today, the “black screen” keeps prevailing.  I did a search on black screen glitches to try to find a fix but the only thing that showed up were suggestions for Sony Vegas.  I tried them but they did not work, I’m assuming because Vegas Pro 20 is newer.  I uploaded a short 7 second video segment so you can see how the host who is doing the interviewing disappears with a black screen and then comes back again.  I also get these glitches directly on the colored lower third where their names are located too. The lower third will turn black and then return to its natural color. The only effects that I have used where it’s glitching out is the “split screen” option (as you can see the split screen) and, on the lower third, I have to use the “chroma keyer” to remove the black background from the lower third or else it will hide the faces.  The lower third is made up of a colored-strip at the bottom and the rest of it is black.

Please help!  I’m at my wit ends about this and, as I previously stated, the black screen is totally unacceptable.  When you have deadlines, this kind of thing with the “black screens” can cause anxiety especially when you’ve tried every way you know to fix it and it still will not work.

What in the world is causing this and how can I fix it?  Please give clear step-by-step instructions and perhaps more than one way to fix this so if one way doesn’t work I can try the other suggestions. Even if you have 5 (five) different ways to fix this for example, then please give me step-by-step instructions for all the different ways.  Please see the 7 second video clip for your reference.  Thank you so much!

@Debbie-Whitmer - We really do need to see a closeup of your timeline just before and then just after that Black screen region. We need to see ALL the Tracks. I’m sure we’ll get to the bottom of this.

Others will be in a better position to assist than myself, but there is a vital piece of information missing about your computer. Which GPU is being used and does it have the very latest driver installed? Also, if it is an NVIDIA GPU, it has always been recommended to use the Studio driver for video editing rather than the Game Ready driver.

Thank you for responding. How do I do that? I have many tracks. And sometimes when you render it, you get the black screens. Then other times, it will start doing the black screens in other places. You never know when it's going to do it and not do it. Should I just do a lot of screen shots inside of Vegas Pro 20 and upload them?

@Grazie - My GPU is the Radeon RX 580 Series. Sorry I didn't include that in my original post. I'll get you the screenshots ASAP. Thank you.

P.S. In Vegas Pro 20 when I click onto Help and Check for Driver updates, I have NOT downloaded that driver AFTER I did my restore. However, I did download it BEFORE I did my restore and that's when the black screens started happening. So, AFTER my restore point option, I have not downloaded those drivers yet because I was testing the black screen issues.

Another tip: Write your system environment in the signature in your profile - then you don't have to do it every time in new posts - see the signature of Grazie, me or others as an example.

...... and please no multiple postings - that brings nothing - only confusion.

@Grazie - Here are my screen shots of before and after as you requested. I don't see how I can get everything in a screen shot because I have 78 tracks and it's impossible to get all those on a screen shot. But I did the best I could do where the black screens show up both on the split screen for the interviewer, and the lower third as I previously discussed.

Crime Scene Investigation. Using a Microscope to see a closeup of your 70 tracks, like this:

Around the area of your Cursor, and where the BLACK is appearing, I'm noticing a "notch" in the top Event Edge. This indicates that just there is a Loop starting. Maybe be nothing, but considering we can't see above as to what you've got, its a Loop. Would it be possible to ZOOM in on your Timeline to see better?

Are you able to zoom in on the graphic I gave you? Because I shut Vegas Pro 20 down and I may not be able to find that exact spot again.

Not to the extent we need. Also, what's in the tracks above? You have 70+ Tracks, if there is a small sliver above, we wont see it.

Because I shut Vegas Pro 20 down and I may not be able to find that exact spot again.

The exact spot is at 00:05:49;15 easy to locate.

@Grazie - I haven't been to bed yet and it's 7:07 AM here and I have to do something at 11:00 AM! So, thus far, I have given you two additional screen shots to look at that are higher up on the tracks of this video interview I worked on. Just write back when you can and, hopefully, you will have some suggestions for me to do for a fix. If not, I'm going to have to have my husband put back on my system an old backup. But I cannot remember if Vegas Pro 20 has been installed on my back up. It's been quite a while but I'm not looking forward to do all those updates on all my programs from my backup. I thought if it was an easy fix, then I would try that first if you or anyone has any suggestions based on what has been discussed thus far. But thank you so much for your help! I'll look back again for any suggestions you may have for me to fix this black screen situation when I can get back here later on today. Thanks again!

@Debbie-Whitmer - I understand why you’ve got a Black area when the cursor is sitting at a point where there is nothing. But what I don’t understand is that we shouldn’t be seeing anything at all! What’s directly above where the Cursor is? What’s directly below? I feel we aren’t getting the whole, picture of your issue. Maybe zip up your Veg and post it for us to see it in its totality.

Debbie-Whitmer wrote on 1/8/2023, 3:49 PM

@Grazie - I have created a ZIP file for you but when I click onto the "upload file" option it tells which files it allows and the ZIP extension is not one of them. So, I cannot upload it to you. It only allows the following file types:

Image files: *.jpeg, *.jpg, *.png, *.bmp

Audio files: *.mp3

Video files: *.mp4, *.mov, *.wmv, *.avi, *.mpg, *.flv, *.mts

@Grazie - Okay, here is the DropBox link.  But I need to say something here.  I think what you are trying to do is to find out if there is a small clip or something on the tracks above that I cannot see that is causing the black screen.  But I do not think that is the problem at all because I inspected all those black screen areas myself BEFORE I even posted my problem here because that seemed to be the logical thing to do.  This video interview is very long and takes a long time to render just to do a test.  I rendered this MANY times in trying to get this broadcast out to the public and I discovered that the black screen issues were RANDOM.  You never knew when or where it was going to do it.

This is what I had to do to FINALLY get this broadcast out.  I watched the video for most of the time WHILE it is was rendering in the display window and one time it actually went past the part that it usually gives a black screen.  The rendering time is usually 1 hour and 43 minutes about the same time as the actual interview.  On about the 9th time I rendered it, it looked good until the very end!  Sigh… On my OUTRO at the very end of  the video, I have a moving outer space background clip and as I was watching the .MP4 playing, all of a sudden I got a black screen on the outer space background!! This was frustrating to say this least.  Anyway, this is what I did to fix that OUTRO part at the end.  I went into Vegas Pro 20 and rendered a loop region only on that OUTRO which is so much shorter to render.  And because this black screen issue is RANDOM (you never know WHERE it’s going to happen), that rendering was finally successful!  So, now I have most of the entire program rendered as an .MP4 PLUS the OUTRO.MP4 in which I have two (2) video files I have to now connect together.  I opened up Vegas Pro 20 to start a brand new video project with nothing in any of the tracks.  Then I dropped the main .MP4 onto track 1 and then I dragged the OUTRO file at the end of the project precisely where it needed to be.  Then I rerendered both of those .MP4 video files together to make one video file. By the way, it rendered out really fast!  When it was through rendering, I FINALLY had a final good copy that I could upload to YouTube and the Rumble video hosting sites.  I only had 1 black screen glitch and it was the lower third that only lasted for about 1 second but I could live with that.  I was thankful that the broadcaster didn’t ask me what took so long to get it out because I’m very fast about getting things out.

So, therefore, I was hoping you could just tell me some other way to fix this such as going into the options/preferences and tell me some block to check or uncheck or something similar that may be causing this problem.  This problem with the black screens just started up a couple of weeks ago and I have no idea what suddenly caused this problem.

Anyway, take a look at the .ZIP file but I don’t think you’re going to find anything obstructing which is causing the black screens because it does this RANDOMLY.  If I do not get an answer soon, I’m going to have to restore my backup which I am not looking forward to.  But the broadcast is every Thursday and I need to be up and running with confidence before Thursday.  Thanks for your help.

EDIT: This .ZIP file has now be removed after a successful solution.

@Debbie-Whitmer, I suggest that, as a test, you disable the GPU (RX580) in the preference to see if it solves the black frame problem you are suffering.

I too use RX580 and, like your horrible experience, I saw the black frames in my preview screen as well as the rendered videos. In my case, those black frames started to appear since the 22H2 Windows updates were installed, it seems. I then restored a disk image that was backed up prior to the 22H2 Windows updates, and everything was back to normal. Hence, I am assuming that VEGAS Pro 20 (& 18 had the same symptom as well) was somehow having trouble working properly with the GPU in conjunction with Windows updates.

@Debbie-Whitmer - I see you've helped yourself! Well done. I've been in similar situations with projects, and, like you, resorted to doing interim or proxy Renders just to get through.

RogerS wrote on 1/9/2023, 3:32 AM

For the AMD GPU, stick to WHQL certified drivers. The rest are basically betas you get to help AMD test.

If you just need to render something now, disable GPU in preferences/video and use Voukoder with x264. voukoder.org/ It may take a while but the file should be pristine.
