Black Screen in Preview Window VEGAS Pro 20

Hi everyone,

I have been using VEGAS Pro 20 for a while, and everything was working fine until recently. Now, when I try to edit a project, the preview window just shows a black screen. The audio plays fine, and the timeline seems to be functioning, but I can’t see any video in the preview.

I have tried restarting the software, resetting the preferences, and even updating my GPU drivers, but nothing has worked so far. Iam running it on [insert system specs, e.g., Windows 11 with NVIDIA RTX 3060].

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Is there a setting I might have missed, or could it be a codec problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I have not experienced this problem. The first place I usually go to when a user posts an issue is to see that their specific computer hardware specs are in their User Profile. Yours is blank. I suggest you add your computer specs to your Signature (see mine below) to make life easy for those that want to take a stab at helping you.

Second, read this POST and especially provide "B" and "C" in your post.

Next, does this happen with all media? What version of VP20 are you using?

If it's not all media please share MediaInfo for the media you are having trouble with- not all codecs work in VEGAS (but it's possible they can be added upon request).

Where the black screen issue has been raised on the forum in the past, it has often turned out that the editor has had the Trimmer window tab activated rather than the Video Preview tab:

Check to make sure that you have the Video Preview window selected rather than the Trimmer window.

If this is the case, the Preview and Trimmer windows can easily be arranged in a different window array where they are separated and thus avoid inadvertently having the wrong window selected:

Cameras: Sony FDR-AX100E; GoPro Hero 11 Black Creator Edition

Installed: Vegas Pro 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 & 22, HitFilm Pro 2021.3, DaVinci Resolve Studio 19.0.3, BCC 2025, Mocha Pro 2024.5, NBFX TotalFX 7, Neat NR, DVD Architect 6.0, MAGIX Travel Maps, Sound Forge Pro 16, SpectraLayers Pro 11, iZotope RX10 Advanced and many other iZ plugins, Vegasaur 4.0

Ensure the Video Preview window is selected, not the Trimmer window, to avoid a blank black screen. Separating these windows can help prevent this issue.
