BUG? AUDIO tracks insert at bottom, VIDEO tracks at top using HotKeys?

Insert.Audio Track (Ctrl-Q) -- new audio track is inserted after the last project track

Insert.Video Track (Ctrl-Shift-Q) -- new video track is inserted before the first project track

Vegas has had this annoying inconsistent behavior for as long as I can remember... does anyone actually like it?

I think the ideal behavior is:

Insert the New Track above (or below) whatever my selected track is.

Is this a Hotkey bug?

If you RIGHT-CLICK on the track header and choose "Insert Audio Track" or "Insert Video Track", it properly inserts the new track above the selected track. But if you use the hotkeys, it executes the behavior mentioned above (first or last track of project).

That's normal. When you go through the menus, the same thing happens. Even right-click and insert and you'll see the same behavior. Video tracks go on top, audio tracks go on bottom. You could always write a script that inserts them using your rules and the reassign those shortcuts to those scripts (one for audio, one for video).

@jetdv  right-click on track header behaves closer to what I'd expect, not inserting as last or first track but rather above my current track.

What do you think about a preferences option to determine the behavior of the insert track commands?

[ ] insert new tracks above selected track

I also prefer the RIGHT-CLICK insert behavior above the selected track. My workaround is to always do it that way. My fear is that they may "fix it" by making the wrong behavior universal.

Hi, for many years when I am starting new project I always add new tracks with shortcuts and it always was that.

Video tracks are created on top and audio tracks on bottom. I dont think it is a bug its normal behavior for me.

If you right-click ON a track, a video or audio track will go above that track. If you right-click a blank area in the track header section, a video track will go on TOP and an audio track will go on BOTTOM. If you use the menu options, a video track will go on TOP and an audio track will go on BOTTOM. The keypress is the same as using the menu.

Good clarification.

Seems weirdly inconsistent that the right-click behavior on a track header would be any different than the right-click behavior anywhere else on the track lane, ya?

Either way -- in this app of such robust flexibility, letting us users choose what the hotkey behavior is for inserting new tracks would be nice. Personally, I always want Ctrl-Q and Ctrl-Shift-Q to insert the tracks above whatever my currently selected track, and if I have 5 to insert, having to right-click, select 5 times is a pia -- hotkeys would be much quicker.

I realize -- this is a really finicky nuance... may be quick-hitting fruit (an easy enhancement) but with limited dev resources I'm sure there are more important things to focus on.

Which is why you might want to use scripting to add the tracks instead. You might try these (I've shortened them down greatly from the standard tutorial scripts.

Add video track above the first selected track (assign to CTRL-Shift-Q)

using ScriptPortal.Vegas;

public class EntryPoint
{
    public void FromVegas(Vegas vegas)
    {
        foreach (Track myTrack in vegas.Project.Tracks)
        {
            if (myTrack.Selected)
            {
                VideoTrack vidTrack = new VideoTrack(myTrack.Index);
                vegas.Project.Tracks.Add(vidTrack);
                break;
            }
        }
    }
}

Add audio track above the first selected track (assign to CTRL-Q)

using ScriptPortal.Vegas;

public class EntryPoint
{
    public void FromVegas(Vegas vegas)
    {
        foreach (Track myTrack in vegas.Project.Tracks)
        {
            if (myTrack.Selected)
            {
                AudioTrack audTrack = new AudioTrack(myTrack.Index);
                vegas.Project.Tracks.Add(audTrack);
                break;
            }
        }
    }
}

Now these won't work if there's not a selected track. They could be modified to check to see if a track has been added and, if not, add using the current behavior (video track at top and audio track at bottom) so I may go back to the full tutorial version and add that capability back in to make some new tutorials.

@jetdv  Scripting can do it -- I just feel it should be standard behavior anyway.

While on the topic though ;-) perhaps remove the break from the track loop -- that way if the user has multiple selected tracks, it'll insert a new one above each. Of course, that complicates things a bit since the track index will change as new tracks are inserted prior, so a "num_inserted" counter will need incrementing and added to the index position for new track inserts.
