BUG! Crash on VFX1.OFX adding basic MediaFX with "Preview" preview!

Comments

Reyfox wrote on 12/6/2022, 5:07 AM

Testing on my system listed in my Signature below, no crashes at the MediaFX level.

I can even adjust the Brightness/Contrast while the clip is playing.

And yes, Preview Quality is set to Preview>Full.

Only V20, not V18!

Just tested-- this problem does *not* occur in my Vegas 18 install, only Vegas 20.

Curious. It's possible I haven't clicked the button to report it, since all things I've read in the past are that the crash reports don't actually submit useful info to the team.. was I mistaken?

@VEGASDerek I've gone ahead and turned off my video acceleration in Vegas so it crashed when the media FX were added to the event. I just clicked "Send" for the problem/error report when the crash dialog appeared, along with the button to "send additional info" -- 2:29pm EST

Hey @RogerS -- are you referring to support tickets opened through the Web, and not the crash dialog which comes up when Vegas crashes? I didn't see any prompts for linked forum content or e-mail addresses when I followed the few prompts to submit my crash report.

I am referring to the blank text box in the crash dialog which comes up when Vegas crashes. You are allowed to fill it with relevant information to help developers understand the issue at hand.

@RedRob-CandlelightProdctns Does not occur with VP19b550 either, I suspect VP19b643 has a high likelihood of being affected.

Reyfox wrote on 12/7/2022, 5:54 AM

@Former user, correct. I too get a black screen when Preview half/quarter is selected. And with Draft selected, none of the settings work.

I can't say it was introduced in VP19 build 643 because it is working on my computer.

Hi guys! Any solution found??
Exactly the same problem here, only with Vegas 20 / 214! No troubles with Vegas 12, 16, 18.
Problem appearing only when adding a Media FX and preview window set to "Preview" Half/Quarter/Auto or to "Draft". I am on a notebook using Nvidia (GTX1060).

Reyfox wrote on 1/2/2023, 3:41 PM

Hmm, thanks for you replay! I hope for an update resolving some bugs....very frustrating when dealing with this kind of problems. I am a Vegas users since it was a Sonic Foundry product (good old days!) and everything was working so well :(
By the way, is Vegas working well to you guys when rendering, having the graphic card selected in the GPU acceleration of video processing, in the Preference's Video tab? To me it is crashing at a certain (random) point of the rendering process :(((. So I have to select "Off" in the GPU acceleration, in order to see the rendering complete.... Also this is really boring!

Reyfox wrote on 1/2/2023, 5:43 PM

I've never had a crash rendering with my computer. I replaced the RX480 8GB with a RX 6700XT 12GB and the performance increase was great. And still no rendering crashes.

But then, my projects are usually under 15minutes.

Need to remind y'all... problem occurs with both nvidia and Radeon systems AND when acceleration is disabled too.

And does not happen in older Vegas builds.

All signs point to a Vegas bug, not a video card driver problem.

Yes, thanks, I can confirm everything you are saying....
And also about the crashes during render...it's an existing problem too :(
Could be a good idea to try to solve also this problem, yes...if anybody has ideas, welcome! Maybe a new thread, as you mentioned.

@VEGASDerek I just submitted another crash report for you. 1:57am EST 1/5/2023.

Here's the comment I put in the box before submitting:

To VegasDerek -- VEGAS CRASH when adding MediaFX and Video Preview window quality set to "Preview (Auto)".  (other users report half also causes the crash)

To recreate the crash, I:
0.  Disable use of Video Acceleration (close/open vegas)
0a. Set Video Preview quality to "Preview (Auto)"
1. Add a video clip to the timeline
2. Add a Media Effect to the clip (e.g. brightness/contrast)

Vegas Crashes.

If Video Acceleration (GPU) is enabld, instead of crashing I'll just get black in the output.

@VEGASDerek I'm fairly certain it affects more than just brightness/contrast.

  • Color Corrector -- same crash -- Just submitted another report (included "MediaFX" in comment)
  • Levels -- same crash -- (submitted report with similar comment)
  • Mirror -- does not crash, but black screen on preview

I could go on but will stop here. LMK if you need me to reproduce with other effects added to the media level too. I'm happy to help however I can.

I can confirm it affects many of the FXs, for example also the Sharpness, Color Balance, Color Curves, Glow, etc...! To me looks like almost all of them give similar problems (Crash or Black screen/vertical stripes), when preview window set to "Preview (Auto/Quarter/Half)".
Tried in 2 different computers, with different CPUs, GPUs, Ram....same results.
