The error message is the solution to your problem: you can't rename a file that is used by Vegas or another program. You cannot rename a word document when you edit it in word, for example.

@J-Toresen Except you can rename a file that is being used by Vegas. but it may be being used as you say by another program or some kind of VP19 temp file is getting in the way.. @Narax Clear temp files from your PC, close all other programs, check Taskmanager to see if programs like VLC are still running even though you've closed them. & maybe even restart your PC then see if it still won't rename.

This is VP21 but i just opened VP19 & it's the same.

It used to work perfectly like 2 weeks ago but now all of a sudden it shows this error, so it is definitely possible who knows why it won't work though

@Narax Could the Preferences option "Close media files when not the active application" have a bearing. It's probably under the General tab. If not ticked try ticking it.

@Narax It appears that you are trying to rename it in Windows Explorer and not from within Vegas while you have that Preference item ticked off that EricLNZ mentions. You can rename a file right from within Vegas. Right click on the file in Project Media, then select Rename from the pop-up menu.

@Robert Johnston I'm not sure what difference that Preference box options makes, I haven't played with it.

But you can rename a file in Windows explorer when that file is open in Vegas, prob is Vegas will give you the 'can't be found msg' , 🤔

@Former user It releases Vegas's "hold" on a file so it can be worked on outside of Vegas. So you could tidy up an image file in a photo editor, then resave it, go back to Vegas and after waking it up the modified file appears.

The downside is it slows down Vegas's awakening when you return to it which is the subject of occasional complaints, the solution for that being to untick the preference.

I know that checkbox works with renders because I do it all the time with audio mixes. And occasionally with video intermediates. Only works with 3rd party apps that do not try and put an exclusive lock on files they operate on... that's probably where the problem lies. If so, see if the 3rd party app has a setting for shared access. Vegas or SoundForge work fine if they are the secondary editing app. The primary instance of Vegas will just update when it regains focus. You might have to close Vegas before editing with 3rd party apps not designed for shared access.
