Can't get Contour's new Control Panel to work with Vegas 23

Martin L wrote on 2/6/2026, 3:52 AM

Hi. I used the Shuttle on and off for years in previous versions of Vegas.

I just installed Windows 11 on a new SSD och reinstalled Vegas and everything from scratch. Now I try to get Contour Shuttle Pro v2 to work with Vegas. Turns out Contour has launched a new control panel, more modern but I can't get aorund it. It's called Contour Design Multimedia Control Panel. See image.

I installed it (and I'm pretty sure it includes the device driver) and of course it doesn't work out of the box so managed to create a new application specific behavior for Vegas 23, directing it to Vegas 23 exe. But I don't see any way to get the buttons working. I find the pref file, but what do I do with it? Should I copy and paste it somewhere?

Does anyone understand the new Control Panel? (the old one was easier)

Fairly much the same issue was raised last month in https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/trying-to-use-contour-shuttlepro-v2-with-vegas-pro-23--150792/

Perhaps something in that thread might help.

Yes, it's true. But it didn't pertain to the new Control panel. I even asked the same question there, but since then noone has replied. So I started this new thread, for viewers to see it more easily and possible help.

@Martin L I was using the old panel, which works with VP23, but no worries, I now uninstalled the old contour version and installed the new panel...

This seems not very intuitive on how to couple the Vegas config file VEGAS Pro 23 -- ShuttlePro v2.pref in the Vegas program folder) to the new panel. I will try to make it work and describe the procedure, if I succeed that is.
Just be patient, I have some time tomorrow to check this out.

A couple of months back I had the same issue, downloaded the Contour new control panel 3.01. Could not get it to work with my Shuttle Pro 2 and Vegas Pro. Contacted their support and this is the message I got back. "Unfortunately, the newer version contains a few bugs and problems, which we will also try to resolve as quickly as possible". Obviously for what I am reading it still has not been fixed to use with VP. I am using the last of the "old" control panel build and it works perfectly and easily.👍

@AmazingM @Martin L I managed to get it working with the new control panel.

I first edited the C:\ProgramData\ContourDesignMediaControllerSoftware.json file

to add the missing vegas 23 buttons and stuff (I used templates of other edit programs)

you can use notepad ++ to edit it.

restart your PC, next you can use the new panel to finetune what you want.

If you like I can dump the contend here. Just ask.

PS the "program data" folder is hidden by default

Oh, great! Yes, please do describe how you did it.

I also got an answer from Contour support now. They write:

"Thanks for your enquiry.
The issue is that preference files from the old version cannot be imported or exported to the newest version, as these are essentially two different programs and cannot interact with each other.

Here is what I can suggest: I would recommend using the older driver version, where you can continue to use your old mappings and settings, and make use of your existing preference file. Here is the link to the older software:
old driver for Windows sxprss

If you choose to use the newest driver version, you would need to start from scratch and set up all your settings and programming again.

Please let me know, if you have further questions,
i´m allways happy to help."

and after me asking if I need to uninstall the new control panel:

"yes, unfortunately that is indeed disappointing, and we truly regret your frustration.
However, our product development team is currently working on implementing a seamless cloud feature in the latest version.
This will allow users to save their settings and access them anytime and from anywhere.

This feature is actively in development and is planned to be released as soon as possible.

In the meantime, you would need to completely uninstall the latest version first. After that, please install only the older version, ideally running the installation as an administrator and also launching the software as an administrator."

So I guess I revert to the old version. But @bitman if you show how you fixed it that could be a good thing too to try. Thanks!

FYI, I deleted the new and installed the old Control Panel and it works fine.

@AmazingM @Martin L

Here is the contour_default.json file that is adapted for the new control panel.
Once you replaced the file you can adapt the keys with the new control panel to your liking.
The problem with the new panel is that there is no template for Vegas pro as a starting point, nor the default Vegas contour file (in Vegas program folder)  itself can be used with the new control panel (as the contour support team confirmed). It is perhaps possible to rebuild from scratch using the panel, but the easiest way is to replace  the contour_default.json file with my file to get a head start (the control panel does the same).

Just a warning, as I have a French AZERTY keyboard, some of the keys may not match with a a standard US QWERTY keyboard. So you may need to adapt the key assigned to your liking, matching your keyboard or to your key mapping preferences of the Vegas key action shortcuts.

The contour_default.json file is found under C:\ProgramData\ContourDesignMediaControllerSoftware

Just a note:
I am also a long-time user of ShuttlePro v2.
I think it's a real shame that (new??) programmers may no longer learn—or follow—the “outdated??” rule of “backward compatibility.”

Sure is a shame. Let's see if and when they'll fix it. In the meantime this thread keeps the Shuttle going.

@AmazingM That is the 1000$ question right! I have no idea, but at least the new UI is more modern and quite self explanatory. Maybe they updated/improved/ their code as well, or fixed some bugs, or fixed security issues, who knows. And do not forget, the device is not only for Vegas (which they seemed to forgot anyway), but for many supported applications (which may required them to update), for example I see application entries for office applications etc. in the .json file as well.
I personally tend to upgrade to the latest SW as much as possible, and especially so if it is free anyway.

The old Control panel looks like it's from the 80ties but works. The new one looks modern and intuitive, but doesn't work with Vegas yet. Unless you do it the Bitman way. ☺️
