Can't start VMS 9

Comments

well, I just purchased the upgrade "on sale" from 8 to 9 and like everyone else I can not use it. It will not open, doesn't even give me a place to enter the registration numbers. I am so in trouble, you folks are way over my rookie head, so I guess I will have to wait for sony to fix the problem. Will send them an email and hope they have an answer I can understand. Vegas 8 worked fine.....I guess if it's not broke don't fix it.
I will contest the charge on my credit card if they don't make it right.

I received an email in regard to the process monitoring data that I sent to Sony. The response I got was as follows:

"We have been investigating the problem you reported with Vegas Movie Studio. Based of the data you compiled, we believe the error is due to how our application registration program attempts to accesses a temporary data file. We will attempt to resolve this problem in a the next update."

The remainder of the email stated that they are working on coming up with a workaround for us to use in the meantime. I will post any further information as soon as I receive it.

Finally something positive on this subject. I"ll be glad when Sony finally rectifies this issue for you folks with a workaround or a solution so that you can start using the product for which you've already paid. I am one of the fortunate ones that have not experienced this problem.

Jelly Man,

This is great, it looks like your efforts might be paying off soon... this is the first encouraging news we've seen.

From what I can tell, ApplicationRegistration.exe has to run every time VMS is launched. On Sony's suggestion, I tried starting ApplicationRegistration on its own, and I got the same results... a couple of flashes of the hourglass, and that was it. So the problem seems to lie within ApplicationRegistration.exe, and Sony appears to be barking up the right tree now... hopefully we have a solution soon.

I'm just joining now and wanted to let you all know that I'm experiencing this, too. It was frustrating not being able to start the software I so eagerly researched, shopped for, and purchased. After over 3 hours of doing much of the same things I've read in this forum I was exasperated (and wishing the Apple Store was open late) - this just shouldn't happen with today's tech.
I also find it interesting that others with Dell machines are having this problem. Mine is a 9100 about three years old running Win XP, and otherwise running flawlessly with all the latest drivers and updates. I have the exact same symptoms: VMS 9.0 (and 9.0a) and DVDA don't start; just the brief hourglass. Sound Forge Studio does work. But the trial download of VMS 9.0a has been working just fine on my other machine (an Acer laptop with Vista).
Anyway, thanks, Sony for seeing our frustration and working on this - we hope to get into video editing really soon!

We believe the problem occurs on systems that have not granted full control to the shared documents folder.

To resolve the problem, please try the following steps.

1) In the Start menu, select "Run..."
2) In the Run dialog, type or paste the following text:

cacls "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents" /G Everyone:F

3) Click OK in the Run dialog.
4) A command window will appear and prompt you "Are you sure (Y/N)?". Type Y and press the enter key.
5) Try again to launch Movie Studio. We expect you will now see the registration dialog.

Please respond on this thread whether these steps resolve the problem for you. If not, please explain what happens when you follow the steps. These steps are just a workaround for the problem which we intend to resolve in the next update. Sorry for the inconvenience. Thanks for your feedback and support.

SCS Dev,

This worked fine for me... I was able to install, register, and run VMS 9.0a without any issues.

I will try the same with DVD Architect and report back later.

Thanks!

Great news, Vegas Mike!

SCS Dev,

I too have now been able to start, activate, and run VMS PE 9.0a and DVDA Studio 4.5d thanks to the workaround you provided. Thanks for the assistance. I've heard lots of great things about the Vegas software products. I'm looking forward to using it instead of wrestling with it. Wish me luck.

This worked for me, too - both VMS 9.0a and DVDA 4.5d are started and I was able to register and start editing.
Thanks so much! Now to the real fun...

This doesn't work for Vista Utimate on Dell 410. I get a "Registration requires administrator privileges. Please run Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0 from an administrator account." message box, even though I am logged on as admin and use the "run as admin" startup. UAC is off. The original install of 9.0 from cd worked fine. Its only after the download and update to 9.0a that the problem occured. I cannot uninstall 9.0a and revert back to the original 9.0 because the 9.0a update does not show up in the "Programs and Features" part of Vista control panel, so it cannot be uninstalled by Vista. Trying CD install quits with "uninstall new version..."

Yup! Congrats! This has allowed me to register and run both Vegas MS PE 9 and DVD Architect 4.5. Thanks for the command line fix!

Everyone on XP:
""cacls "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents" /G Everyone:F""

into a cmd.exe session window.

I had a feeling it was something simple...

Ivan Lietaert wrote on 8/31/2008, 5:28 AM
I wouldn't call that 'simple', spearhead. No user could have found it. It's a very serious bug.
ritsmer wrote on 8/31/2008, 8:40 AM
Right Ivan - and Microsoft also admits this error:
"Before Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-051, explicit permissions to the COM+ catalog were not required." in their june, 18. 2008 bulletin.

Even if it is not a Vegas error the Sony people quickly have found and and posted a soloution (see 9 messages above) - in parallel to Spearhead.

Yes! Runs OK now.

Dell Dimension 3000; 2.8 GHz P4; 1 GB RAM; XP SP2; integrated graphics.

Thanks to all who helped solve this.

Registration problem in VISTA solved by setting XP SP2 compatibility as the run mode for the program.

Did you resolve this problem Bingy? I have been able to install & register MS Platinum 9 Pro & Architect studio etc, & it seems that Cinescore studio installed too, but I can't find it to register it?????

Did not work for me. The workaround that is. Vegas still hangs up on the UI

FWIW: I bought VMS Platinum edition a few days ago. When I installed from the CD, neither VMS or DVD Architect would open. After I downloaded & installed the "Vegas Movie Studio 9.0b Platinum Update," VMS would open but DVD Architect still would not open (there wasn't an update for my version of DVD Architect 4.5).

After I ran the "shared documents" fix posted earlier in this thread, DVD Architect would open. I've included the text from the original post below for convenience:

I just bought VMS9 Platinum Pro Pack tonight and have the same message:

Registration requires administrator privileges. Please run Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0 from an administrator account.

I have installed the 9.0b update, reinstalled the software, and everything else mentioned in this thread. Nothing works. The command line suggestion didn't work... there is a very brief flash of a cmd screen and then it goes away.

NOTHING is working. I AM logged on as an Administrator Account in Windows XP.

Any clue as to what's going on anyone?

Thank you! (I emailed Tech Support this evening and am awaiting a response)
