Can we get back to the important things? What do we want from Vegas?

I had problems with VV3 for video using win98se...I open a project and my video files are out of sync with audio. Clips that I placed on the timeline are moved/shifted over, markers in the wrong place. Audio was fine. Moved to win2k and all is well. Both my video and audio experiences have been awesome [knock on wood]. Not sure how in the hell I always pull off these glitches but I tell ya... So far so good.

More tweaks...
1.When you press shift+the record icon on a track you are able to choose a folder to store the data. After already selecting a folder whenever I go back and try to check where a track is going to it opens the "tree" at a default "desktop" location[this is where it always opens up too]. I have already selected a folder so all I need is to just show me the END of the chain so I can see where its going. Alot of times I'm just working within 3 folders and find it a big pain to have to always search to find this persons audio folder even though that folder is right next to the folder in use. I hope I made myself clear.
2. A recent files list when you right click anywhere in a open template. Like in sound forge. Also how about a priority list for projects that you never want to be shifted/moved out of the 9 last used list. Some projects are never finished quickly and at one point I had to search for the .veg file to work on a old session again.

Back to work...Later.

I came to the conclusion from reading the posts at the sonar+cubase site forums+ from reading that updates for win2k/xp will be out in the 3rd quarter 2002 [win2kserv.pac3,XPserv.pac 1]. I judge the features of that program[sonar] to where Vegas will hopefully be in a while. Again...To get the FULL function out of your daw you need WDM drivers hence win2k/XP. 98 "will" run but the latency isn't up to par[I wonder how 5.1 would sound then]. Since they aren't going the vst2/mme/asio2 route like vegas then I felt that VV4 would be the same. Maybe they have something else up their sleave[sofo] but whatever it is better be able to compete with sonar. Do you think that people aren't using Sonar because its pro win2k/XP? Plus soundcards from what I've been seeing update their drivers every 3-6 months or so. Echo layla24 just released a upgrade today and hopefully in 6 months they'll have it licked. I do agree that soundcard companies are extremely slow at getting it right but who cares anyway when vegas still doesn't support wdm. I guess I'm just looking at things with a glass is half full perspective. My system has never run this snappy/stable ever when using win98se. I just don't feel that it would effect much because if sonar are betting that win2k/xp is the way to go then I guess their research showed that it was a good bet to make. Whatever...this thread is about new features for Vegas 4 not who can predict the future of DAW's. Anymore great ideas for Vegas 4?

Have a goodnight.

Well I just got back from the cubase site and found out that Cubase 6 will be out shortly...and that IT WILL ONLY BE COMPATIBLE WITH WIN2K/XP![in other words they stopped developing for win98se]... Plus sonar has just announced that it is shipping its next upgrade soon as well [sonar 2.0]. Again you have to use win2k/XP to really get the most out of it yadda yadda yadda...But wait...they'll all be out of business soon because no serious audio engineer who loves his win98se so will ever upgrade to something like that! Looks like its smoooooth sailing from here on in for Vegas...yup.

[who made the call!!!...who made the call!!!...where my boys at!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) ]

Man after seeing all the updates I raced to the adobe site and only found that they updated photoshop to 7. Premier has yet to update. I'm curious as to how the next logic upgrade will be.

I can hardly wait till everyone one else finds out that they're wrong and Joe [buddy] is right.

Go ahead...ignore this user!!! Later.

I'll NEVER go back to WIN98SE. XP is SO MUCH more stable. Here's one little example. For some nutty reason Windows Explorer for the last day or two is acting up. No... it isn't due to XP, I've had this same problem in WIN98SE. Anyways under WIN98SE it would either lock up the system forcing a reboot or it would just wipe out my taskbar. Either way annoying. Under XP it pops up a little warning window, states the problem and I can just ignore it. I can even drag the warning window out of the way. XP, just goes about its business and keeps running all my other open applications. Try that in WIN98. I've run XP from the day it was introduced back on 10/25 and NEVER has it crashed the system even once. For a similar period running WIN98 I probably would have had to do a forced reboot dozens of times. If you're in the middle of something like where you've made a few dozen changes to some video and the auto save hasn't kicked in yet, that can be a real pain.

In terms of the next release of Vegas I would have to honestly say look at Sonar and take notes. It has all I could really ask for plus a load of crap that I would love to play with.Sonar audio features with VV on top of that...WOW. I know its alot to ask for but you guys have had more than enough time to develop for audio. I have faith in you guys please don't make me look dumb...I'm great at that on my own.

One more tweak:

When using the volume/pan envelopes I would like the option of 1 or 2 points to be placed on the timeline at a time. It would make my workflow quicker in terms of dropping the audio and bringing it back in. Instead of right clicking 4 points just 2{2}points. Plus I would like each point introduced to NOT move at all untill I do so. What I mean by this is say you have a point...You right click on the timeline and add a point. If you right clicked alittle off from where the last point was in DB or panning the point sort of comes in all jerky looking. In other words If I have a volume point 0db,add point...the point that appears starts off at 0DB too...not.5db,1.5db,-.5db. These were of course determined by where the cursor/hand pointing icon was placed roughly. I just would like it exact. To this day it still bothers me while I edit.
Again, start off at 0db,add point=0db...add next point=0db...raise to +5db,add another point=+5db[not+5.5 or +4.5 or anything else other than the last point in time].

Also could I have the function of dragging two points that are vertical to one another and not just horizontal. That would help me in terms of getting my edits precise with the least amount of headache.
Later.

Instead of right clicking, just double click on the envelope line. isn't that much easier?

>These were of course determined by where the cursor/hand pointing icon was placed roughly. I just would like it exact. To this day it still bothers me while I edit.

if you double click, the point appears on your line every time. you can also double click any existing point to make it jump to the 0 line.

I like your ideas... selecting points on multiple tracks, adding two points at a time somehow (maybe a control + double-click)

Hi,

I forgot

10. OMF import and export, for export sesions to Protools and Avid.

Bye

OMF support is a topic of heated discussion over at the cubase forums. For anyone not sure what it is here is an explanation/quote from there:

OMF (Open Media Framework)
What the Export audio to OMF feature gives is the ability to export your audio tracks, edited and in the same positions as your timeline, in one file to take to an audio post production suite ready to be added to, modified, improved and "sweetened
Basically, , it's meant to allow you to say do a session on
one DAW or DVW - save the session and it's data in an OMF file and
transport it to any other system, regardless of the platform and be able
to open the OMF file and be able to recreate the session.
The crucial word here is:
REGARDLESS OF THE PLATFORM.....exept Cubase that is.

Hyshi

Logic audio 5 will support it. I'm not sure if Sonar will though. In conjunction with an awesome AUDIO upgrade to Vegas PLUS OMF import/export could be a huge factor in making many users switch to SOFO products. I think that cubase SX will eventually support it but they're pushing nuendo which has this feature already. This has enraged many users who are in turn looking elsewhere for their needs to be satisfied. Later.

Hello,

I use this feature in Nuendo, isn't 100% compatible with Protools, but works.

I'm tired of render track by track for export my work, I hope that SF listen my wish, and offers a OMF import/export (OMF2).

A reply from the creative cow web site I think you should read:

Subject: Re: OMF Support?

If it was easy we would have done it long ago. We've looked into "exporting to AVID formats" many times, and we were on the AAF committee from the earliest days.OMF/AAF are expensive to implement and maintain, especially for companies not named AVID. Impossible for SF? No.

Interestingly, I just read in the new DV mag that OMF export from AVID MC to AVID/DS (same company) works only maps about 60% of the stuff it could/should. Maybe that isn't a problem and there's good enough level of compliance (?)

Questions:

1) How much would you be willing to pay for an OMF/AAF export plug-in? Should it be free?

2) What app not made by AVID puts out a really solid OMF list (not some fake broken thing like FCP)? Anybody know for sure, meaning actually tried it ? Discreet guys- do they have it nailed?

If having this feature would help a persons workflow then I can't see why anyone wouldn't purchase the plugin separately. Go to www.creativecow.net to also get some valueable info+ voice ones opinions on the next upgrade. Later.

I have a suggestion that will make this forum more useful. Is there any way that it can be set up so that you can scroll down through all the messages on one string, instead having to click on each individual message. I have a lowley 56k modem and it takes forever for each message to start downloading. It is very frustrating and I usually give up after just a few messages. The only way that I think Premiere has an advantage over VV3 is that their forum works the way I suggest, which makes it so much quicker to use. RonR.
