Can you rename Video Plugins in Plug-in Manager?

Rednroll wrote on 6/11/2021, 8:42 AM

I just finished organizing my audio plugins in the plugin manager and am now working on doing something similar with the installed Video Plugins.

With Audio Plugins I'm able to right click and Rename the default plugin name but when I try to do the same with Video plugins it displays "rename" and "delete" in the right click context menu, but they're always greyed out. So I'm thinking there may be a pre-condition I need to perform prior so these items aren't greyed out?

Good question! I just updated NewBlue Titler Pro 5 to 7 but VP 18 still shows 5 in the list. The info at the bottom of the window is correct and 7 runs correctly. As you say the rename option is greyed out. Maybe to do with new favorites feature because VP17 updated correctly.

I'm doing something similar. Installed NewBlue plugins but wanted to append "NewBlue" to the front of their names to more easily identify them. I ended up placing them all in a separate sub folder instead named "NewBlue".

However, I also decided to create an excel spread sheet which includes the name of each plugin and once I get more familiar with using each plugin, I have been adding a description of what it does and how to use it. Being relatively unfamiliar with video plugins, there's been many times in the past I had to try out multiple plugins to eventually find the one I needed to achieve a particular task. Then the next time I went back to do that similar task, my memory had faded and went through the same searching/auditioning process. So creating the separate excel document is a way to remind myself of a particular plugins function by adding a more detailed description in the excel document.

With audio plugins, I have been able to directly select, copy and paste each plugin's name into my excel sheet, but with video plugins I can't and find myself manually typing it's name into my excel spreadsheet instead which is very time consuming.

You shouldn't be able to do this with Audio or Video plugin names. Being able to this will open up a can of worms and in my opinion it's a bug that no-one (but you) has discovered.
For the same reason, you're not allowed to rename or delete default plug-in presets.

I don't agree it's a bug with Audio Plugins. I recall awhile back this was a requested feature which was implemented into Vegas of being able to rename plugins for better organizational purposes. Really not a can of worms to open if it was implemented correctly since if a reference to the original name was necessary, then what needs to be done is a cross reference dynamic look-up table is created which is very common thing to implement in the software development realm. ie (original_Plugin_Name = User-defined_Plugin_Rename).

Older plugins, including the Audio plugins, have allowed renaming. Our OFX plugin infrastructure does not allow for it currently.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions! I now know not to continue figuring out a way for the context menu items to not be greyed out. Back to manual typing in my excel reference document. 😟

Reset your plugin cache in Vegas and the name will change.

So, just in case anyone was curious about a summary of the Plugins that come with Vegas.

I'm currently working on continuing this list for the NewBlue plugs I have installed as well. I'll be updating the description field as I use them so when I forget in the future, I can use excel to sort the fields and have a reminder with more details of the functionality of each plugin. I think it will come in useful for a video newb like myself.

Do you know this compilation?
I know it's not up to date - but maybe an idea to design it.

Thank you! That looks very similar to where I'm trying to go with this in my description fields. Looks like I can use a lot of that to fill in my descriptions.

Thanks. That did the trick. It wasnt easy to find out how though. For anyone who doesnt know:
Delete plugin_manager_cache.bin found in C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\18.0

Rednroll, are you willing to share your spreadsheet? Or perhaps put it on a shared drive somewhere so that people will always have the latest version? Thanks.

I am not 100% sure how Vegas works with VST but with all audio DAWs I use the plugins are referenced by an ID. the name is irrelevant and can be changed in various ways without issues.

For example (this is from Cubase plugin xml file):

<plugin name="Cinematic Rooms Professional" cid="5653544352503163696E656D61746963"/>
<plugin name="Cinematic Rooms" cid="56535443525F3163696E656D61746963"/>

The cid is the important part and across all Steinberg Applications remains the same. You can change the name or indeed if you don't want to edit XML you can change the name of the file itself to anything you like. This is also one of the nice things about having these settings in a transparent XML file. So that they can be adjusted to the users prefs, if required.

So I also agree it is not a bug by any means.
