I don't have quicktime installed though.

Not yet but will try it soon...I may also try a different approach as I have the After Effects project and I will re-render it myself with the ProRess 444 alpha channel.

I can't wrap my head around that it works in V18.

I tried with another AVI non-lagarith codec and have the same problem...these AVI files and not alpha channels...

@Julius_ I can import your (broken) avi into VP23:

Wonderful, everyone can except me :( ahhh...Might have to nuke everything and reset Vegas.

FWIW I could also open it without issue in 23 and have nothing specially installed for AVIs. I'd reset VEGAS.
